RepublicansOnParade4

Here is the forty-ninth article in our Republicans on Parade series, featuring individuals who personify what the Republican Party has become. Today’s honoree is Jared Padgett. He is so honored for finding a Second Amendment Solution to the sin problem for Republican Supply-side Jesus (the exact opposite of the real Jesus). It is the first time this award has gone to a minor or been awarded posthumously.

0615Jared-PadgettThe diary of the 15-year-old Oregon high schooler who shot and killed a classmate and injured a teacher before turning the gun on himself revealed that the teen was a religious fundamentalist who was out to kill “sinners.”

According to the New York Daily News, freshman Jared Padgett was known at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Gresham, OR as being quiet, but was “highly regarded for his spirituality” by church elders.

Padgett walked into Reynolds High School last Tuesday carrying “an AR-15 type rifle, a semi-automatic handgun, ammunition and a large knife,” and opened fire, killing freshman Emilio Hoffman. Portland’s KGW reported that police found the teenager’s journal while searching through the belongings he left behind.

A police source told the TV station that Padgett did not name specific students or teachers in his plans, but was rather on a mission to cleanse the world of “sinners.”… [emphasis added]

Here’s the video.

As long as Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christians keep preaching violence as a means of enforcing their invasive piety codes on others, they forfeit the claim that there is no blood on their hands, when one of their own acts it out.

  1. Really?  Padgett was "was known at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Gresham, OR as being quiet, but was “highly regarded for his spirituality” by church elders." was he?  That tells me all I want to know about that lot!  Heaven help us all if that sort of 'spirituality' catches on!

    • Pat, we don't know much about 'that lot', the child could have been quiet but pious in church.

  2. The Talibangelical christianists have moved the sectarian Overton Window so far to the insanely wacko right that they now feel comfortable to have a Rethuglican candidate advocating the STONING OF GAYS TO DEATH!

    God help us all!

    • Absolutely outrageous! . . . and he sure did a dance and a half around his comment.  I also noticed an article about the Idaho GOP convention.  It was so fractious that Raul Labrador lost control of the meeting and sufficient numbers left that the meeting had to be adjourned without even accomplishing basic business.  And this is the party that thinks it is fit to run the country?!  "God bless America" is taking on a whole different meaning.  Perhaps it should be "God help America.  Protect her from herself."

  3. As Dorothy L Sayers had Lord Peter Wimsey say in "Gaudy Night," "The first thing a principle does, if it is really a principle, is kill somebody."  Lord Peter was an 18th-century-type rational agnostic; Sayers was a Christian but well aware of how bad Christianity can go how fast.  You may get some argument on whether Mormons are Christians, but they say they are, so let's not make that an issue.

Nameless mentions Scott Esk.  I guess we can add "The Lottery" to "The Handmaid's Tale" in the category of literature which we view as cautiorary but the GOP regards as an instruction manual.

    • Yes, Joanne, the Mormons are Christians.  The name of the church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

  4. Okay, I am wondering something : "15-year-old Oregon high schooler who shot and killed a classmate and injured a teacher before turning the gun on himself revealed that the teen was a religious fundamentalist who was out to kill “sinners.”… If he was out to kill Sinners, I have to assume he consider himself one – since he killed himself after only shooting two others.  I think he might have realized something sooner than most religious nuts.

    • I doubt "Reality Testing" is one of the Talibangelical christianists' strong suits …

  5. I think it's time to reintroduce these so-called "Christians" to lions.

  6. This, to me, is a very sad story about a very troubled and possibly mentally ill child. Fifteen is still a child.  Did no one realize he was so obsessed with killing sinners?  Surely his parents knew something was wrong.  Sorry, TC, but I can't equate this tragedy with Repuglithans.  They are adults and know full well wht they are doing.

  7. My first reaction to this was along the lines of this boy being mentally ill, and did his parents or his church not notice that something was amiss?  But then when you consider that at his church he "…was known … as being quiet, but was “highly regarded for his spirituality” by church elders.", he must have been a good actor because he fooled everyone.

When it comes to religion, any religion, the more extreme the view, the more implacable and violent actions become.

Like Edie, I can't quite tie this particular event to the Republicanus/Teabaggers.  But, with the right wing  nut evangelical pseudo Christians pushing their way into controlling government and trying to make the US a right wing evangelical theocracy, I think there could be more of this with its hate, bigotry and racism.

    Whoa, scares me…
