Republican Hate Overboard

When the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a report in 2009 that there was an increased danger of hate crimes by right wing extremists, the right wing extremists, aka the Republican Party objected so strenuously that the author was fired.  The DHS now has only one agent investing right wing terrorism, and that is a huge mistake.

7SPLCHateThe number of antigovernment “Patriot” groups on the American radical right hit an all-time high in 2012, the fourth straight year of explosive growth, according to a report released today by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). As the new year began, serious talk of gun control, prompted by a Connecticut school massacre in December, fueled even more rage on the right, and the threat of violence loomed .

The new report, contained in the latest issue of the quarterly investigative journal Intelligence Report, found that the conspiracy-minded Patriot groups, which numbered only 149 in 2008, soared over the first four years of Barack Obama’s presidency to 1,360 in 2012 — an astounding 813% increase. At the same time, it found that hate groups remained at near-record levels of over 1,000 (see interactive map and state-by-state lists of 2012 hate groups here)… [emphasis added]

It’s not just in the South.  Click through to the SPLC map, pictured above to see, that these violent hate group are everywhere.  Of course, Republicans are at the forefront of calls for violence, like former NH Republican State Committee Chairman, Jack Kimball.

7KimballJack Kimball, of the Granite State Patriots Liberty PAC and a former Republican State Committee chairman, is mustering support for another 2nd Amendment rights rally at the Statehouse and warning gun owners that complacency amid recent attacks on constitutional rights "will eventually turn into gun confiscation."

Kimball, who owns a business in Portsmouth, promoted the "Honor Your Oath" rally April 13 on the GSPLP’s Facebook page and underscored that elected leaders must be true to their oath of office.

"It is up to ‘We the People’ to make it clear to those who would violate their oath that we want them to step down or to be forcibly removed from office," Kimball wrote on the Facebook page. "Time is running out. We need a massive turnout to send a clear message that the Sleeping Giant has awakened and we are coming. Remember: ‘All it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.’ It’s time to join the fight."… [emphasis added]

When confronted, Kimball later claimed that he was really referring to impeachment, but that excuse does not hold water.  The US Senate is not going to uphold bogus impeachments of Obama or other Democratic officials.

Ed Schulz and his panel examined the rise of Republican hate.

Note that the he had to look no further than Faux Noise, the Republican Ministry of Propaganda for examples of Republican hate on display.  We should not be surprised.  In 2010 Republicans celebrated the anniversary of the Murrah Building bombing with “open carry” events featuring Rep. Paul Braun (R-GA) and Larry Pratt, the subject of a recent Republicans on Parade segment.

Mark my words.  InsaniTEA is a far greater threat to our National Security than Al Qaeda.

    Agreed!! Excellant post TC.

  2. Agreed TC— I have never dismissed these groups–too easy to dismiss them as crazy– they are not– Delusional ? Oh yes– but their delusions are fixed, and organized—They are very dangerous , for many reasons– not the least of which is the appeal they have for precariously balanced individuals very capable of acting out–
The election 2 X of a black President- has brought to the surface all their latent fear—-primarily I think , the fear of losing control– They are faced with concrete demographic facts– The world- Their world- has changed — no longer a possibility , but a clear fact–; They cannot deal with this in any other way except to react – lash out-
In my opinion , the Oklahoma Bombing was an opening battle in their war against the reality of change-
Groups like these have been around a long time- mostly made up of society’s misfits — I dont think that is the case as much any more– they are more organized– with leadership—they are the monsters among us–

Buy these nut-jobs some Budweiser and and keep tabs on them… 🙂

New Hampshire is a State that I would drive around if I could to get to Maine…. sigh

  5. It is really too bad we cannot take the hate-mongers off the air-waves. But, in this country, we have Freedom of Speech.

  6. It almost makes me feel guilty for my strong support of gun control laws – I'm terribly anti-2nd amendment – so uch so that I'm probably on a hit list somewhere – I had no idea that these groups had grown so exponentially during our "black President" era — which only proves how racism is truly alive here – along with justice scalia (although he keeps Thomas under his robes) – this is very well presented and very disturbing. I've called the NRA our "domestic terrorist organization" and I'm fairly certain these groups thrive with the LaPierre-tete endorsement to arms!

Thanks for filling me in – although the hate-mongers may have grown substantially, it seems that their opponents have also been directed toward reason (at least so I hope) – I know I'm far more extreme in the opposite direction — I would have the "amendment" revised altogether to be appropriate for this day and age, but the fact that these groups are existing and thriving, make the appeal that much more credible, and backgrounnd checks even more so!

    Great journalism – thanks TC!

  7. I am glad that you noted "it is not just in the South"  which is apparently the general consensus.  Racism exists all over this country.  I have talked to people from Wyoming, Idaho, Michigan, Ohio,  and Arizona who astound me with their need to have a gun.  The fear is there, and Fox keeps it fueled.

  8. Certainly, there is no doubt that the Republican/Teabaggers are the party of hate and the party of death.  Their own actions support those claims.  During the 2012 campaign, Romney, and indeed the party, courted a number of the hate groups in order to boost their vote numbers and win the election.  And being a party that is very fanatical evangelical pseudo Christian in focus, they would appeal to several of the hate groups listed on the SPLC list, which is rather amusing since they are in no way truly Christian.  Being anti LGBT and anti immigrant plays to other hate groups. On top of that, Wayne LaPierre and the NRA are stoking the flames of hatred even more by saying that Mr Obama is coming for their guns, and that was even before the Sandy Hook murder tragedy.

I took the time to look at parts of the SPLC's report "Terror from the Right" and it IS scary to know that there are so many hate groups out there.  California has the most at 82, followed by Texas with 62 and Florida with 59.  For me, quite amazingly, Arizona only has 28, but it would be interesting to know the numbers of people that call themselves members.  By that criteria, that might boost some ratings.

As I read your piece TC, and scanned the SPLC report, I kept coming back to the Andy Borowitz article noted below.  And although this may have been directed at the Republican/Teabagger Congress that insists on holding the nation hostage for their own infantile reasons, I realised that Borowitz is correct.  The greatest danger is from within.  And these hate groups are from within.  There is a saying that you can choose your friends but you can't choose your family.  Ain't that the truth!  If these hate groups are part of the American family, and the RepublicanTeabaggers are encouraging them, the American family is beyond dysfunctional.

“As terrorists, every now and then you have to step back and admire when someone else has beaten you at your own game,” he said. “This is one of those times.”

  9. I do agree TC – and so does everyone else with a brain and a conscience!
