Republican War on the Poor

The Republicans have a new budget plan, in which they renege on the spending levels to which they agreed last year, when they blackmailed America with government shutdown.  So much for good faith negotiations.  Ryan’s new abomination is so draconian that it personifies class warfare: a Republican War on the Poor.

22war-on-the-poor…Ryan would cut $770 billion over 10 years from Medicaid and other health programs for the poor, compared with President Obama’s budget. He takes an additional $205 billion from Medicare, $1.6 trillion from the Obama health-care legislation and $1.9 trillion from a category simply labeled “other mandatory.” Pressed to explain this magic asterisk, Ryan allowed that the bulk of those “other mandatory” cuts come from food stamps, welfare, federal employee pensions and support for farmers.

Taken together, Ryan would cut spending on such programs by $5.3 trillion, much of which currently goes to the have-nots. He would then give that money to America’s haves: some $4.3 trillion in tax cuts, compared with current policies, according to Citizens for Tax Justice.

Ryan’s justification was straight out of Dickens. He wants to improve the moral fiber of the poor. There is, he told the audience [fascists delinked] nat the conservative American Enterprise Institute later Tuesday, an “insidious moral tipping point, and I think the president is accelerating this.” Too many Americans, he said, are receiving more from the government than they pay in taxes… [emphasis added]

Horse feathers!  Where is Ryan’s concern for the moral fiber of 30 of America’s largest corporations pay less than zero in taxes?  OOPS!  Where is Ryan’s concern for the moral fiber of most red states that get more than they pay in taxes?

On an Oregon note, I have hear many claims that Ron Wyden (D-OR) supports Ryan’s Medicare plan.  While there was previously discussion of support in principal, apparently Ryan misrepresented what he intended to include in the plan.  Ron Wyden does NOT support it.

Ed Schultz covered the story with Steve Israel (D-NY).

We need to fight against the Republican War on the Poor with the same fervor we have fought against the Republican War on Women.  It’s one we can win!

  1. Ron Wyden received some incendiary messages from me and hubs. I also tweeted Jeff Merkley that he needed to do an intervention on Ron. I think Wyden was less fooled by Ryan than he now claims. He no doubt heard from many of his constituents of the Liberal Persuasion. Without us, he’s toast. He’d better watch his ass or switch to the Republican party next primary.

    • Perhaps your right, Marva, but over the last several months I’ve had three in depth conversations with his staff about it, and their detailed description with what Wyden did and didn’t support was always quite far from Ryan’s proposals.  We was willing to allow people choosing private options, as Medicare Advantage plans are today, but insisted that Medicare as is remain an option indefinitely.

  2. Improve the moral fiber of the poor? They should be starting with Wall St.

  3. I’d say it’s high time that Wisconsin voters CUT RYAN!

  4. I’d say it’s high time Wisconsin voters CUT RYAN!

  5. “MARCH to MADNESS” – or Brackets for Ryan’s republican Budget Plan

  6. Paul Ryan has no moral fiber. He is consumed with the notion that his rich pals will make him richer.

  7. Moral ?? There is no sense of morality left in the GOP– as represented by Paul Ryan– They / he defines Sociopath—a to the bone sense of contempt for the people they are supposed to represent — if there was anything else needed to reinforce their agenda , to make it clear , this is it Ok–

I recall , very well , the fear that once prevailed– I am a child of the depression , I recall my Dads years of struggle to find work– I recall my young mother-  sick , with no health insurance — because there was nothing for the poor , I recall her death at 49 years— and my Dad’s struggle to pay off the hospital debt– I recall his death , worn out , at 70 yrs– I recall the ‘poor farm’  it was still there when I was a child– I remember being hungry , and cold , as a child , there was no help– and yes we lived–sure we did– we got thru it— and  I was able to give my kids more—but they sure as hell weren’t privileged either– unless you call  having their needs met  , for food, warmth , clothing education- I was, and am . grateful we were able to raise and educate a family without have to go thru the demeaning begging for assistance that we are returning to– unless these  GOP- Right Wingers are stopped–

Ryan needs some struggle in his privileged to and spoiled life–as do the rest of the Bastards who  plot to return this country to the past—

  8. The Republican/Teabaggers like Paul Ryan are nothing more than self agrandising Greedy Old Pharts.  And for a group that proclaims Jesus Christ (we all know it isn’t the real one!), they sure don’t know the Beatitudes — Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.  Jesus was for the poor and downtrodden of his time, not the self important Pharisees.  To me, we are all capable of being Pharisees, but the Greedy Old Pharts have made an art form of being modern day Pharisees.  They only see and do that which brings them more!

    • I agree.  Republican supply-side pseudo-Christians are today’s Pharisees and Sadducees.  If the real Jesus walked the earth again, they would crucify him.
