{"id":9939,"date":"2013-02-07T04:23:04","date_gmt":"2013-02-07T12:23:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=9939"},"modified":"2013-02-07T04:23:04","modified_gmt":"2013-02-07T12:23:04","slug":"how-republicans-went-postal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2013\/02\/07\/how-republicans-went-postal\/","title":{"rendered":"How Republicans Went Postal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">This is not the first time I have covered this story, but in light of recent developments, it is time to revisit what the Republican Party is doing to the US Postal Service.&#160; To be brief, the post office is under assault by Republicans, who are trying to destroy it for their own political ends, which as usual, conflict with the best interest of the American people.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; float: left\" title=\"7usps-logo\" alt=\"7usps-logo\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/7usps-logo.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"329\" \/>The U.S. Postal Service announced on Wednesday that it will discontinue first class Saturday mail delivery, marking another milestone in the decline of the once-ubiquitous government service. But it isn\u2019t a switch to online mail that\u2019s causing the postal demise \u2014 it\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/2013\/02\/06\/postal-service-to-cut-saturday-mail-to-trim-costs\/#ixzz2K7t56ojM\" target=\"_blank\">Congress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Under the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act, Congress has for years forced the USPS to <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2011\/09\/28\/330524\/postal-non-crisis-post-office-save-itself\/\" target=\"_blank\">pre-fund 75 years\u2019 worth of pensions<\/a> for its employees, a requirement not made <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/ondeadline\/2012\/10\/01\/postal-service-default-retiree-health-benefits\/1606815\/\" target=\"_blank\">of any other public or private institution<\/a>. That means that the Postal Service is footing the bill for employees it hasn\u2019t even hired yet.<\/p>\n<p>The USPS doesn\u2019t actually receive money from the government, but still needs Congressional approval to make any changes to its structure.
