{"id":8975,"date":"2012-09-30T10:29:21","date_gmt":"2012-09-30T17:29:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=8975"},"modified":"2012-09-30T10:29:22","modified_gmt":"2012-09-30T17:29:22","slug":"what-the-gop-knew-about-nathan-sproul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2012\/09\/30\/what-the-gop-knew-about-nathan-sproul\/","title":{"rendered":"What the GOP Knew about Nathan Sproul"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">In the developing Republican voter fraud scandal, one thing seemed surprising.&#160; After the fraud became apparent, the Republicans were quick to point out that they had been scammed by the company and take corrective action.&#160; That struck me as contrary to the Republican history of election theft, and I could not help but wonder just what the Republican Party knew about this company and its owner, Nathan Sproul.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"30Sproul\" border=\"0\" alt=\"30Sproul\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/30Sproul.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"202\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Nathan Sproul, the infamous voter suppression operative from 2004, accused of running an operation in several states that destroyed voter registration forms signed by Democrats, had been secretly paid by Republicans this year on another multimillion-dollar contract for voter registration in swing states.<\/p>\n<p>Sproul\u2014who managed an $8 million voter outreach program for Republicans in 2004\u2014is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/blog\/170198\/gop-quietly-hires-firm-tied-voter-fraud-scandal-work-battleground-states\" target=\"_blank\">accused<\/a> of <strong>having his workers destroy voter registration forms turned in by Democrats in Nevada and Oregon that year<\/strong>. <strong>Similar tactics were reported in Pennsylvania, Minnesota and West Virginia<\/strong>. They\u2019re also accused of other hijinx, from gathering signatures to place Ralph Nader on the ballot to deceiving people in voter registration drives at Walmart. CBS News has reported on faxes they received showing <strong>Sproul\u2019s firm misrepresenting themselves as the left-leaning America Votes! group<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s now in hot water because his firm was caught turning in <a href=\"http:\/\/firstread.nbcnews.com\/_news\/2012\/09\/27\/14126789-rnc-cuts-ties-with-firm-over-voter-fraud-allegations?lite\" target=\"_blank\">faked voter registration forms<\/a> in Palm Beach County and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/politics\/la-pn-voter-registration-florida-republicans-20120928,0,7654954.story\" target=\"_blank\">nine other counties<\/a> in Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Within a day of The Nation\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/blog\/170198\/gop-quietly-hires-firm-tied-voter-fraud-scandal-work-battleground-states\" target=\"_blank\">reporting<\/a> the story, officials with the national Republican Party cut ties with Sproul, whose firm has already received $3.1 million for work in Virginia, Florida, Nevada, North Carolina and Colorado. <strong>Although the payments were made by state party committees, its now clear that the Romney campaign and the national GOP coordinated the effort<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s confirmation of another wrinkle in the story\u2014the Los Angeles Times reports that <strong><font color=\"#ff0000\">Republicans were so concerned with the many scandals surrounding Sproul and his previous work, they indeed asked him to set up a shell corporation to hide the payments<\/font><\/strong>.
