{"id":8886,"date":"2012-09-19T11:01:20","date_gmt":"2012-09-19T18:01:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=8886"},"modified":"2012-09-19T11:01:20","modified_gmt":"2012-09-19T18:01:20","slug":"3-am-the-middle-east-in-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2012\/09\/19\/3-am-the-middle-east-in-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"3 AM: the Middle East in Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">It\u2019s 3 AM, when the phone rings in the oval office.&#160; Open conflict has broken out between Israeli and Palestinian forces in both the West Bank and Gaza.&#160; Claiming that Iran is supplying the Palestinians with weapons and logistical support, Israel is about to launch a strike against Iran and has their nuclear arsenal at the ready.&#160; What will President Willard Romney do to defuse the crisis?&#160; The phone in the oval office keeps ringing.&#160; There\u2019s nobody home.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; float: left\" title=\"19RomneyWarMonger\" alt=\"19RomneyWarMonger\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/19RomneyWarMonger.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"500\" \/>No one has ever had any illusions about where Mitt Romney stands on the two hottest disputes in the Middle East: the argument over the creation of a Palestinian state, and the debate over what can be done to assure that Iran does not get a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n<p>In both cases, he has taken positions very close to those of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, his friend from their days together as young consultants here in Boston. <\/p>\n<p>But if he is elected president in November and finds himself in negotiations over a future Palestine on Israel\u2019s borders, Mr. Romney may find that his comment at a campaign fund-raiser \u2014 captured on video \u2014 that <strong>\u201cthere\u2019s just no way\u201d a separate state can be workable could undermine his effectiveness in bringing the two sides together.
