{"id":8754,"date":"2012-09-03T10:06:39","date_gmt":"2012-09-03T17:06:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=8754"},"modified":"2012-09-03T10:06:39","modified_gmt":"2012-09-03T17:06:39","slug":"labor-day-greeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2012\/09\/03\/labor-day-greeting\/","title":{"rendered":"Labor Day Greeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto\" title=\"Labor-day2012\" alt=\"Labor-day2012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Labor-day2012.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"850\" \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">For most of my early life I considered Labor Day little more than a day off at the end of summer.&#160; That\u2019s because I am not a union man.&#160; I have never belonged to a union, nor has anyone in my family.&#160; So what has the labor movement done for me?&#160; I have learned what organized labor has done to improve the lot of all American Workers, and I have come to understand that Labor Day is a celebration of Union labor, and one that is well deserved.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; float: right\" title=\"labor\" alt=\"labor\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/labor.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"264\" \/>ThinkProgress has assembled just five of the many things that Americans can thank the nation\u2019s unions for giving us all:<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \"><span><strong><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">1. Unions Gave Us The Weekend:<\/font><\/strong><\/span><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"> Even the ultra-conservative Mises Institute notes that the relatively labor-free 1870, the average workweek for most Americans was <a href=\"http:\/\/mises.org\/daily\/1590\" target=\"_blank\">61 hours<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font> \u2014 almost double what most Americans work now\u2026<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&#160;<\/font><\/span><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span><strong>2. Unions Gave Us Fair Wages And Relative Income Equality:<\/strong><\/span> As ThinkProgress reported earlier in the week, the relative decline of unions over the past 35 years <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/default\/2011\/03\/03\/147994\/unions-income-inequality\/\" target=\"_blank\">has mirrored<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font> a decline in the middle class\u2019s share of national income\u2026<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \"><span><strong><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">3. Unions Helped End Child Labor:<\/font><\/strong><\/span><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"> \u201cUnion organizing and child labor reform were often intertwined\u201d in U.S. history, with organization\u2019s like the \u201cNational Consumers\u2019 League\u201d and the National Child Labor Committee\u201d working together in the early 20th century to ban child labor\u2026<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \"><span><strong><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">4. Unions Won Widespread Employer-Based Health Coverage:<\/font><\/strong><\/span><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"> \u201cThe rise of unions in the 1930\u2032s and 1940\u2032s led to the first great expansion of health care\u201d for all Americans, as labor unions banded workers together to negotiate for health coverage plans from employers\u2026<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \"><span><strong><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">5.
