Gordon Smith.&#160; In hopes of becoming GOP-free, I volunteered for the campaign of Jeff Merkley (D-OR).&#160; Ever since, I have been glad I did, because not only has he supported progressive issues, but also, has assumed a leadership role in so doing, a rare feat for a Freshman Senator.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"13Merkley\" border=\"0\" alt=\"13Merkley\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/13Merkley.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"257\" \/>Moving to blunt the &quot;corrosive&quot; influence of anonymous money gushing into political campaigns, a group of Democratic senators, including <a href=\"http:\/\/gov.oregonlive.com\/Congress\/Jeff-Merkley\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Merkley<\/a> of Oregon, said Thursday that <strong>legislation requiring public disclosure of all people donating more than $10,000 will come to the Senate floor next week<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The senators described their bill &#8211; the Disclose Act \u2013 as a necessary response to the Supreme Court\u2019s 2010 ruling in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/case-files\/cases\/citizens-united-v-federal-election-commission\/\" target=\"_blank\">Citizens United<\/a> case that allow people and organizations to make unlimited donations.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, which is now in its third incarnation after earlier versions were blocked, would require any person or organization to publicly announce the contribution by submitting information to the <a href=\"http:\/\/fec.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Federal Election Commission.<\/a> Current law shields the source of large donations to political instruments known as Super PACs. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Allowing organizations and special interests accepting the money &#8211; often in donations exceeding $1 million &#8211; to know the identity of the donor while the public remains in the dark, distorts democracy and leaves voters powerless<\/strong>\u2026 [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2012\/07\/post_69.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Oregonian<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Here\u2019s video:<\/font><\/p>\n<p>&#160;<iframe loading=\"lazy\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fqlgj_JY6-o?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"640\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Kudos to Jeff and all the Senators supporting the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discloseact.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Disclose Act<\/a>.&#160; Click through for the petition.<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The last Republican I had representing me in any capacity was Sen.
