Sadly, that is no longer true.&#160; The conservative (Canada&#8217;s closest thing to US Republicans) government there is parroting the policies of US Republicans and fouling their own nest the way the Republican Party is fouling ours.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"CANADA TARSANDS ALBERTA\" border=\"0\" alt=\"CANADA TARSANDS ALBERTA\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/4tarsands.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" \/>For years, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/transcanada-pipeline-lobbyist-works-all-the-angles-with-former-colleagues\/2011\/09\/16\/gIQAYq3BnK_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Canada<\/a> has been seen as an environmental leader on the world stage, pushing other nations to tackle acid rain, save the ozone layer and sign global treaties to protect biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>Those were the old days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The government of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is rewriting the nation\u2019s environmental laws to speed the extraction and export of oil, minerals and other materials to a global market clamoring for Canada\u2019s natural resources<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government is saying, politically, we want to hitch our wagon to an economic development strategy in which natural resource extraction plays a very large part,\u201d said Brian Crowley, managing director of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, a public policy think tank in Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>The government has added provisions to an omnibus budget bill that would revamp the way the government reviews the environmental impact of major projects, regulates threats to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/12\/02\/AR2010120205011.html\" target=\"_blank\">fisheries<\/a> and <strong>scrutinizes the political activities of nonprofit groups<\/strong>\u2026 [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/canadian-government-overhauling-environmental-rules-to-aid-oil-extraction\/2012\/06\/03\/gJQAyxx2BV_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">It is my hope that Canada will dump Harper and his harlots, before he turns one of the world\u2019s greatest concentrations of pristine beauty into a cesspit!<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here in the US we have always looked to our neighbors to the north with respect over the care they have demonstrated for the environment.&#160;
