{"id":7731,"date":"2012-05-10T11:48:28","date_gmt":"2012-05-10T18:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=7731"},"modified":"2012-05-10T11:48:28","modified_gmt":"2012-05-10T18:48:28","slug":"mourdock-says-tax-the-poor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2012\/05\/10\/mourdock-says-tax-the-poor\/","title":{"rendered":"Mourdock Says Tax the Poor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Richard Mourdock, the Teabagger that unseated Lugar in Indiana, is turning out to be a real piece of work.&#160; I\u2019ve mentioned that he defines \u201cbipartisanship\u201d as making Democrats accept Republican positions.&#160; Now he is equating the current tax structure as slavery and invoking the name of Abraham Lincoln to raise taxes on America\u2019s poorest citizens.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"10Tax-the-Needy\" border=\"0\" alt=\"10Tax-the-Needy\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/10Tax-the-Needy.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"334\" \/>The Republican Party\u2019s nominee for Indiana\u2019s U.S. Senate seat recently compared the fight over tax rates and reform to former president Abraham Lincoln\u2019s concern over slavery, alluding to Lincoln\u2019s famous \u201cHouse Divided\u201d speech ahead of the Civil War.<\/p>\n<p>State treasurer Richard Mourdock (R) rehashed a <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2012\/05\/10\/481645\/mourdock-taxes-slavery\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2011\/07\/25\/278175\/taxing-the-poor-republicans-support\/\" target=\"_blank\">favorite GOP talking point<\/a> \u2014 that 47 percent of Americans don\u2019t pay income taxes \u2014 at the town hall in Columbus City, Indiana, comparing those 47 percent to the Confederate states that seceded from the Union in an attempt to protect and expand slavery. Referencing Lincoln\u2019s speech, Mourdock said that as long as nearly half of Americans don\u2019t pay taxes, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cN8Zg2FWUd8&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\">we are a house divided<\/a>\u201d that is presumably on the point to another fight, this time between the rich and the poor&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Watch it:<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<iframe loading=\"lazy\" height=\"360\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cN8Zg2FWUd8?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"640\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p>Mourdock\u2019s ridiculous allusion to a speech referencing the spread of slavery aside, the facts he presented to town hall attendees aren\u2019t telling the whole story. It\u2019s true that half of Americans don\u2019t pay federal income taxes, but they <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2011\/05\/04\/173928\/gop-taxes-wealth-exploding\/\" target=\"_blank\">do pay<\/a> state income taxes, payroll taxes (which Mourdock referenced), and a host of other taxes.
