Politico broke a story yesterday about a fundraising document prepared by the Chairman of the RNC Finance Chairman.<\/font><\/p>\n

\"GOP2\"<\/a> The Republican National Committee plans to raise money this election cycle through an aggressive campaign capitalizing on \u201cfear\u201d of President Barack Obama and a promise to "save the country from trending toward socialism." <\/p>\n

The strategy was detailed in a confidential party fundraising presentation, obtained by POLITICO, which also outlines how \u201cego-driven\u201d wealthy donors can be tapped with offers of access and \u201ctchochkes.\u201d <\/p>\n

The presentation was delivered by RNC Finance Director Rob Bickhart to top donors and fundraisers at a party retreat in Boca Grande, Florida on February 18, a source at the gathering said. <\/p>\n

In neat PowerPoint pages, it lifts the curtain on the often-cynical terms of political marketing, displaying an air of disdain for the party\u2019s donors that is usually confined to the barroom conversations of political operatives. <\/p>\n

The presentation explains the Republican fundraising in simple terms. <\/p>\n

"What can you sell when you do not have the White House, the House, or the Senate…?" it asks. <\/p>\n

The answer: "Save the country from trending toward Socialism!\u201d <\/p>\n

Manipulating donors with crude caricatures and playing on their fears is hardly unique to Republicans or to the RNC \u2013 Democrats raised millions off George W. Bush in similar terms \u2013 but rarely is it practiced in such cartoonish terms\u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

While crude caricatures of Bush circulated throughout the Bush Regime, never did they reach such an extreme, and they were a net phenomenon, never rising to the level of national fundraising.<\/font><\/p>\n

Particularly noteworthy is the disdain with which they hold their oen supporters.<\/font><\/p>\n

\u2026The presentation divides fundraising into two traditional categories, direct marketing and major donors, and lays out the details of how to approach each group.<\/p>\n

The small donors who are the targets of direct marketing are described under the heading "Visceral Giving<\/strong>." Their motivations are listed as "fear<\/strong>;" "Extreme negative feelings toward existing Administration;" and "Reactionary<\/strong>."<\/p>\n

Major donors, by contrast, are treated in a column headed "Calculated Giving<\/strong>."<\/p>\n

Their motivations include: "Peer to Peer Pressure<\/strong>"; "access"; and "Ego-Driven<\/strong>."\u2026 [emphasis added<\/em>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Michael Steele is squirming desperately to distance himself from this disaster.  He claims he didn\u2019t know.  While he may not have known about the specific presentation, he had to know about the strategy it represents.<\/font><\/p>\n
