{"id":7405,"date":"2012-03-18T15:21:17","date_gmt":"2012-03-18T22:21:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=7405"},"modified":"2012-03-18T15:21:17","modified_gmt":"2012-03-18T22:21:17","slug":"do-you-want-to-keep-medicare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2012\/03\/18\/do-you-want-to-keep-medicare\/","title":{"rendered":"Do You Want to Keep Medicare?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">I, for one, depend on Medicare.&#160; Were it not there, I would have no health care, so I consider it important for me to keep it, but more important than I am, millions of other Americans either have Medicare or have invested in Medicare for their future retirement through payroll deductions.&#160; If the Republican Party has their way, we will all lose Medicare.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; float: left\" title=\"GOPNinja\" alt=\"GOPNinja\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/GOPNinja.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"621\" \/>Are Republicans ready to be trusted with the reins of power?<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re thinking of answering this in the affirmative, you might want to pause long enough to learn what transpired on the third floor of the Capitol on Thursday. There, four prominent Republican lawmakers announced their <a href=\"http:\/\/nbcpolitics.msnbc.msn.com\/_news\/2012\/03\/15\/10704915-in-risky-election-year-move-republicans-offer-medicare-alternatives?chromedomain=usnews\" target=\"_blank\">proposal to abolish Medicare<\/a> \u2014 <strong>\u201csunset\u201d<\/strong> was their pseudo-verb \u2014 <strong>even for those currently on the program or nearing retirement<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>In Medicare\u2019s place would be a private plan that would <strong>raise the eligibility age<\/strong> and shift trillions of dollars worth of health-care coverage from the government to the elderly. \u201cThis will be the new Medicare,\u201d Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), the proposal\u2019s author, announced. <\/p>\n<p>For years, Republicans have insisted that they would not end Medicare as we know it and that any changes to the program would not affect those in or near retirement. <strong>In the span of 20 minutes Thursday, they jettisoned both promises<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president and Harry Reid have been licking their chops for over three years now waiting for Republicans to actually try to deal with the large problems like Medicare,\u201d Sen.
