{"id":7292,"date":"2012-03-03T00:02:09","date_gmt":"2012-03-03T08:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=7292"},"modified":"2012-03-03T00:02:09","modified_gmt":"2012-03-03T08:02:09","slug":"responding-to-rush","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2012\/03\/03\/responding-to-rush\/","title":{"rendered":"Responding to Rush"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">I\u2019m sure I don\u2019t have to tell you that the de facto head of the Republican Party,Rush Limbaugh, has gone off the deep end in his vile attacks against Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown Law student, whom Republicans prevented from testifying to a hearing on birth control.&#160; Democrats have responded appropriately, condemning his remarks.&#160; Some Republicans have criticized him in the vaguest possible terms, but none have actually condemned his remarks.&#160; In my opinion, there is only one viable alternative for responding to Rush.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"3.limbaughfluke\" border=\"0\" alt=\"3.limbaughfluke\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/3.limbaughfluke.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"129\" \/>&#8230;Democrats saw opportunity even as they expressed outrage. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called on House Republicans to disavow the statements and&#160; referenced the \u201cvicious and inappropriate attacks\u201d in an email soliciting signatures for a petition against \u201cthe Republican war on women.\u201d Other groups launched fundraisers, asserting that Limbaugh\u2019s opinion only emphasized the importance of recruiting and supporting Democratic women to run for Congress.<\/p>\n<p>House Speaker <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/politics\/la-pn-rush-limbaugh-draws-rebukes-from-all-sides-20120302,0,7405254.story?track=rss&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+latimes%2Fnews%2Fpolitics+%28L.A.+Times+-+Politics%29#\" target=\"_blank\">John A. Boehner<\/a> (R-Ohio) <strong>kept quiet on the matter<\/strong>, but his spokesman said Boehner \u201cobviously believes the use of those words was inappropriate, as is trying to raise money off the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Santorum said Friday that Limbaugh was being \u201cabsurd,\u201d but <strong>dismissed him as an entertainer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, at least two of Limbaugh\u2019s sponsors, Sleep Train and Sleep Number, announced on Twitter that they had pulled their ads from his show<\/strong>. Sleep Train, a Sacramento-area mattress company, <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/lanow\/2012\/03\/rush-limbaughs-sex-comments-drive-away-california-advertiser.html\" target=\"_blank\">had advertised<\/a> on the show for more than 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Sleep Number said on Twitter that the company had decided to immediately pull its advertisements because Limbaugh\u2019s statements \u201cdo not align with our values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said <strong>the president called Fluke \u201cto express his disappointment that she has been the subject of inappropriate personal attacks, and thank her for exercising her rights as a citizen to speak out on an issue of public policy.\u201d<\/strong>&#8230; [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/politics\/la-pn-rush-limbaugh-draws-rebukes-from-all-sides-20120302,0,7405254.story\" target=\"_blank\">LA Times<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Perhaps the best coverage on this issue I have seen came from <\/font><font color=\"#0000ff\">Ed Schultz, who covered this story in four segments. Here are two of them. How absurd!&#160; First, Fluke\u2019s testimony concerned a friend who lost an ovary, because she could not afford the medication, as a treatment that had nothing to do with birth control.&#160; Second, only someone stupid enough to be a <em>Dittohead<\/em> (Limbarf acolyte) woulk fail to realize that the cost of taking one pill per day is the same, whether one has sex once a year of fifty times a day.&#160; One might as well try to silence a bull moose in heat.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">The one viable way to respond to Rush is to take away his microphone by refusing to patronize any business that supports his hate speech with their advertising dollars.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">There are several things to do here.&#160; One is to complain to Clear Channel at <\/font><font color=\"#0000ff\">(210) 822-2828.&#160; Another is to find out who his local advertisers are in your town and contact them.&#160; A third is to sign a petition at <a href=\"http:\/\/leftaction.com\/action\/boycott-rush\" target=\"_blank\">BoycottRush.org<\/a>.&#160;
