[Rip-off delinked] , a controversial billion-dollar-a-year company which peddles dietary supplements and cleaning products; back in 2004, Forbes, echoing <a href=\"http:\/\/is.gd\/ZGSm5L\" target=\"_blank\">complaints<\/a> to government agencies, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/forbes\/2004\/1011\/089_print.html\" target=\"_blank\">described<\/a> the company as \u201ca pyramid selling organization, built along the lines of Herbalife and Amway.\u201d VanderSloot has long used his wealth to advance numerous right-wing political causes. Currently, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/politics\/articles\/2012\/02\/02\/hedge_fund_moguls_top_list_of_donors_to_super_pac_supporting_mitt_romney\/?page=2\" target=\"_blank\">he is<\/a> the <strong>national finance co-chair of the Mitt Romney presidential campaign<\/strong>, and his company has become one of the largest donors ($1 million) to the ostensibly \u201cindependent\u201d pro-Romney SuperPAC, Restore Our Future. Melaleuca\u2019s get-rich pitches have in the past caused Michigan regulators to take action, resulting in the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/outlook.motherjones.com\/owa\/auth\/logon.aspx?replaceCurrent=1&amp;url=https%3a%2f%2foutlook.motherjones.com%2fowa%2fWebReadyView.aspx%3ft%3datt%26id%3dRgAAAAA5oGdw1ygKQaMQwhXJMJfbBwCDDI7%252fN6OKQoR1U%252fcB4AWxAAAInmejAABoLHBkG11iSprxVbTYLtiiAAAy6aUkAAAJ%26attid0%3dBAAAAAAA%26attcnt%3d1%26pspid%3d_1329148041291_683819584\" target=\"_blank\">entering into a voluntary agreement<\/a> to \u201cnot engage in the marketing and promotion of an illegal pyramid\u201d\u2018; it <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.orlandosentinel.com\/1992-09-04\/business\/9209040518_1_melaleuca-distributors-network-marketing\" target=\"_blank\">entered into a separate voluntary agreement<\/a> with the Idaho attorney general\u2019s office, <a href=\"https:\/\/motherjones.com\/files\/melaleuca1991avc-1.pdf\">which found<\/a> that \u201ccertain independent marketing executives of Melaleuca\u201d had violated Idaho law; and the Food and Drug Administration previously <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/ICECI\/EnforcementActions\/WarningLetters\/1997\/ucm156509.htm\" target=\"_blank\">accused Melaleuca of deceiving consumers about some of its supplements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But it is VanderSloot\u2019s chronic bullying threats to bring patently frivolous lawsuits against his political critics \u2014 magazines, journalists, and bloggers \u2014 that makes him particularly pernicious and worthy of more attention. In the last month alone, VanderSloot, using threats of expensive defamation actions, has successfully forced Forbes, Mother Jones and at least one local gay blogger in Idaho to remove articles that critically focused on his political and business practices.
