{"id":7148,"date":"2012-02-16T00:04:55","date_gmt":"2012-02-16T08:04:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=7148"},"modified":"2012-02-16T00:04:55","modified_gmt":"2012-02-16T08:04:55","slug":"the-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2012\/02\/16\/the-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"The Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">After Democrats blocked Republican attempts to poison the payroll tax cut extension with the Keystone XL Pipeline, mandatory drug tests for unemployment benefit recipients, and more.&#160; Republicans finally found that they had boxed themselves into a political corner from which they escape only by giving-in, which they did on all but one thing.&#160; They still refuse to make millionaires, billionaires and corporate criminals share the burden that their greed has imposed on the rest of us.&#160; And already, Republicans are lying about it.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; float: left\" title=\"16TheDeal\" alt=\"16TheDeal\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/16TheDeal.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"203\" \/>Last year, when Democrats and Republicans were negotiating a short-term extension of the payroll tax holiday, multiple Republicans pushed the false idea that extending the payroll tax cut would <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2011\/12\/07\/383989\/republicans-payroll-tax-undermine-social-security\/\" target=\"_blank\">undermine Social Security<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font> by robbing its trust fund of vital revenue. Those claims were repeatedly debunked by media outlets, members of Congress, and even the Social Security Trust Fund\u2019s chief actuary.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Republicans, however, either missed that debunking or have willfully ignored it. With Congress nearing a deal to extend the cut through 2012, GOP leaders like Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), who as the House Budget Committee chairman has positioned himself as the party\u2019s top budget and finance authority, is again pushing the <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/news\/210847-paul-ryan-concerned-payroll-tax-deal-will-endanger-social-security\" target=\"_blank\">false notion<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font> that the payroll tax cut will hurt Social Security, as The Hill reported today:<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \"><span><strong><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Ryan warned that the the move could erode the Social Security Trust Fund<\/font><\/strong><\/span><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">, which is funded by the payroll tax.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cMembers on our side of the aisle are divided on this question. <span><strong>I personally have a problem with what happens with the Social Security trust fund<\/strong><\/span>.
