{"id":7062,"date":"2012-02-10T00:00:51","date_gmt":"2012-02-10T08:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=7062"},"modified":"2012-02-10T00:00:51","modified_gmt":"2012-02-10T08:00:51","slug":"republicans-greedy-on-transit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2012\/02\/10\/republicans-greedy-on-transit\/","title":{"rendered":"Republicans Greedy on Transit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">House Republicans have just put together a transportation bill so horrid, that even Obama\u2019s Republican Secretary of Transportation has called it \u201cthe worst transportation bill\u201d he had ever seen.&#160; The crux of this measure is gutting federal support for public transit, a slap in the faces of poor Americans, minorities and environmentalists, while providing benefits for Big Oil.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"10MAX\" border=\"0\" alt=\"10MAX\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/10MAX.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"288\" \/>House Republicans have released a transportation bill that would eliminate the government\u2019s dedicated funding stream for mass transit, instead counting on a plan that the Congressional Budget Office found would cover <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2012\/02\/08\/421674\/boehner-oil-transport-plan-fail\/\" target=\"_blank\">just 5 percent of transit costs<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font>. The New York Times called the bill \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/02\/09\/opinion\/a-terrible-transportation-bill.html\" target=\"_blank\">uniquely terrible<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font>,\u201d while Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, a Republican, called it \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/transportationnation.org\/2012\/02\/02\/lahood-transpo-bill-worst-bill-in-decades-most-partisan-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\">the worst transportation bill<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font> I\u2019ve ever seen during 35 years of public service.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Cuts to mass transit fall hard on low-income people who count on public transportation to get to work, go to school, and go about their lives. And they <a href=\"http:\/\/www.policylink.org\/atf\/cf\/%7B97C6D565-BB43-406D-A6D5-ECA3BBF35AF0%7D\/transportationRX_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">fall hardest on low-income minorities<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font>, who, as the research organization PolicyLink noted, as disproportionately likely to not own an automobile:<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">As housing and jobs have moved farther apart, the distance has created employment barriers for anyone without unlimited ability to drive. <span><strong>Nineteen percent of African Americans and 13.7 percent of Latinos lack access to automobiles, compared with 4.6 percent of whites. Poverty complicates the problem: 33 percent of poor African Americans and 25 percent of poor Latinos lack automobile access, compared with 12.1 percent of poor whites.<\/strong><\/span> Cars owned by low-income people tend to be older, less reliable, and less fuel-efficient.
