{"id":6663,"date":"2012-01-05T00:02:12","date_gmt":"2012-01-05T08:02:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=6663"},"modified":"2012-01-05T00:02:12","modified_gmt":"2012-01-05T08:02:12","slug":"obama-appoints-cordray","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2012\/01\/05\/obama-appoints-cordray\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama Appoints Cordray!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">In a move that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/2011\/12\/29\/open-thread12292011\/\" target=\"_blank\">I have strongly recommended<\/a>, Barack Obama appointed Rick Cordray, Elizabeth Warren\u2019s choice, to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).&#160; He also appointed three new members to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).&#160; Republicans have been obstructing all of those appointments, because they want neither consumers nor labor represented federally despite laws that provide for both.&#160; Republicans are furious!<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"5Cordray\" border=\"0\" alt=\"5Cordray\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/5Cordray.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"238\" \/>President Obama threw a gauntlet before Congressional Republicans on Wednesday, defying deep opposition to appoint Richard Cordray as director of a new consumer protection agency in a move that ignited a <strong>possible legal challenge and Constitutional fight<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to install Mr. Cordray without Senate approval under the Constitutional provision for making appointments when lawmakers are in recess was a provocative opening salvo in Mr. Obama\u2019s re-election strategy of demonizing Congress. <\/p>\n<p>The president, announcing his decision before a political rally-like crowd of 1,300 at a high school here in Mr. Cordray\u2019s home town, seemed to welcome a contentious second session of the 112th Congress, in which any attempts at bipartisan compromise appear in danger of being lost in all-out election-year war. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI refuse to take \u2018no\u2019 for an answer,\u201d Mr. Obama said. <\/p>\n<p>He said he had looked for opportunities to work with Congress. But, he said, \u201c<strong>I am not going to not stand by while a minority in the Senate puts party ideology ahead of the people we were elected to serve<\/strong>.\u201d\u2026 [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/01\/05\/us\/politics\/richard-cordray-named-consumer-chief-in-recess-appointment.html\" target=\"_blank\">NY Times<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">The onslaught of republican whining was expected.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"5Boner\" border=\"0\" alt=\"5Boner\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/5Boner.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"177\" \/>&#8230;The Senate&#8217;s top Republican, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, accused Obama of an unprecedented power grab that &quot;<strong>arrogantly circumvented the American people<\/strong>.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Added House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio: &quot;<strong>It&#8217;s clear the president would rather trample our system of separation of powers than work with Republicans to move the country forward. This action goes beyond the president&#8217;s authority, and I expect the courts will find the appointment to be illegitimate<\/strong>.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>It was unclear who might undertake a legal fight.
