{"id":6562,"date":"2011-12-27T00:03:02","date_gmt":"2011-12-27T08:03:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=6562"},"modified":"2011-12-27T00:03:02","modified_gmt":"2011-12-27T08:03:02","slug":"snyder-goose-steps-backward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/12\/27\/snyder-goose-steps-backward\/","title":{"rendered":"Snyder Goose Steps Backward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Often times Michigan does not get the national attention it deserves, because their totalitarian Republican governor is not as flamboyant as the Koch suckers in charge of Ohio, and Fitzwalkerstan, formerly Wisconsin, but here\u2019s some information about the harm that he and and the Republican party are imposing on the neediest Michiganders in order to increase corporate welfare.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"27Snyder\" border=\"0\" alt=\"27Snyder\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/27Snyder.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"290\" \/>In the last few weeks of 2011, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) rounded out his concerted campaign against Michigan workers with a few final laws. In a prejudicial move against the LGBT community, Snyder signed a measure <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/lgbt\/2011\/12\/23\/394829\/michigan-bans-all-domestic-partnership-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\">prohibiting all public employees<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font> from providing benefits for their unmarried partners. In considering his state\u2019s 10.6 percent unemployment rate, Snyder also signed a law forcing some of Michigan\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deptofnumbers.com\/unemployment\/michigan\/\" target=\"_blank\">over 400,000 unemployed workers<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlive.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2011\/12\/gov_rick_snyder_signs_bills_lo.html\" target=\"_blank\">take low-wage jobs<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font> after 10 weeks of benefits, even if those jobs pay less than they were making before:<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \"><span><strong><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">The measures require some unemployed workers to take new jobs after 10 weeks of benefits even if the available work is outside their previous experience or pays lower wages than they were making before.<\/font><\/strong><\/span><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"> They also make it harder for someone to collect jobless benefits if they\u2019re fired for cause or leave a job voluntarily.[&#8230;]<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Snyder disagreed with critics who say requiring jobless workers to take a job paying 120 percent of their weekly benefit could trap them in a low-wage position by leaving them little time to look for work in their area of expertise.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \"><span><strong><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cIt\u2019s to encourage people to work. It\u2019s not to have them go backward,\u201d Snyder said of the legislation. \u201cIt\u2019s easiest to find a job when you\u2019ve gotten a job.\u201d<\/font><\/strong><\/span><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"> <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">This new requirement comes in addition to Snyder\u2019s decision to cut the availability of unemployment insurance from 26 weeks to 20 weeks starting in 2012.
