John McCain (R-AZ) \u2014 who is facing a primary challenge from former right-wing GOP congressman J.D. Hayworth \u2014 played along with Fox News host Sean Hannity\u2019s uninformed idea that the recent snow storms in the mid-Atlantic region disprove that the earth\u2019s climate is changing. \u201cI think they made some movie that showed that the earth was going to freeze over as a result of global warming. I never quite understood that,\u201d McCain said. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\"><font color=\"#000000\">Yesterday, a local Arizona conservative talk radio host [ideologue delinked] told McCain that \u201c80 percent\u201d of global warming science \u201cis based on fraud and misinformation.\u201d Despite having previously refuted such nonsense publicly, McCain again remained silent. Pandering to the far right, the Arizona senator later said he \u201cnever\u201d supported capping carbon emissions: <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\"><font color=\"#000000\">Q: If we knew then what we know today about these scientists and this fraud, <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">would you still be in favor of capping carbon emissions at 2000 levels<\/span>?<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\"><font color=\"#000000\">MCCAIN:<span style=\"font-weight: bold\"> I\u2019ve never favored it at a certain level<\/span>. I\u2019ve favored reducing greenhouse gas emissions for the good of \u2014 I mean we all know that greenhouse gases are bad! But I\u2019ve said, in order to achieve that we have to have nuclear power as a component of it\u2026<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\"><font color=\"#000000\">&#8230;In fact, McCain has actually<\/font> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/pressrelease.cfm?ContentID=6437\" target=\"_blank\">co-sponsored<\/a> <font color=\"#000000\">cap-and-trade legislation. \u201cWe need a successor to Kyoto, a cap-and-trade system that delivers the necessary environmental impact in an economically responsible manner,\u201d McCain wrote in a 2008<\/font> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/c7e219e2-f4ea-11dc-a21b-000077b07658.html?nclick_check=1\" target=\"_blank\">op-ed<\/a><font color=\"#000000\">. And during the his 2008 presidential campaign, he delivered a major speech on his plan to address climate change. \u201cA cap-and-trade policy will send a signal that will be heard and welcomed all across the American economy,\u201d he said in the speech. And he specifically outlined his plan to cap carbon \u201cat a certain level\u201d:<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\"><font color=\"#000000\">McCAIN: We will cap emissions according to specific goals, measuring progress by reference to past carbon emissions. <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">By the year 2012, we will seek a return to 2005 levels of emission\u2026by 2020, a return to 1990 levels\u2026and so on until we have achieved at least a reduction of sixty percent below 1990 levels by the year 2050<\/span>.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\"><font color=\"#000000\">This isn\u2019t the first time McCain has tried to run to the right on this issue to fit his political objectives. During the 2008 campaign, he tried to claim that by supporting cap-and-trade, he wasn\u2019t endorsing any \u201c<\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/depends-on-the-definition-of-the-word-mandatory\/\" target=\"_blank\">mandatory cap<\/a><font color=\"#000000\">.\u201d But of course, a \u201ccap\u201d is in fact a \u201cmandatory\u201d limit. The New York Times<\/font> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/cwire\/2010\/02\/10\/10climatewire-challenged-back-home-on-his-right-mccain-sta-91703.html\" target=\"_blank\">noted last week<\/a> <font color=\"#000000\">that McCain \u201cis likely to keep his distance\u201d from his previous support of cap-and-trade and addressing global warming, an issue he \u201conce led\u201d on, because of Hayworth\u2019s primary challenge\u2026 [<em>emphasis original<\/em>]<\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/02\/17\/mccain-never-favored-cap\/\" target=\"_blank\">Think Progress<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p>The once great maverick transformed himself into just another GOP liar in his quest for power.&#160; Wasn\u2019t it bad enough that he put our nation in peril by attempting to put Bimbo Barbie a heartbeat away from the presidency?&#160; He\u2019s has now turned his back on all the good things for which he used to stand.&#160; Even more pathetic, he\u2019s the best of the Republican leaders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Aren\u2019t you glad McConJob lost last year?
