{"id":6101,"date":"2011-10-12T00:02:07","date_gmt":"2011-10-12T07:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=6101"},"modified":"2011-10-12T00:02:07","modified_gmt":"2011-10-12T07:02:07","slug":"a-gathering-of-vultures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/10\/12\/a-gathering-of-vultures\/","title":{"rendered":"A gathering of vultures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Last night, Republican candidates for president faced off in a debate on the economy.&#160; They were long on blame, but offered absolutely nothing new to help create jobs.&#160; Instead they backed the well-worn and thoroughly debunked supply side nonsense and plans to raise taxes on the poor to provide more benefits for the rich.&#160; <\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"12vultures\" border=\"0\" alt=\"12vultures\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/12vultures.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"239\" \/>The government is the problem. That was the message Tuesday night as the eight Republican presidential hopefuls clamored to blame Washington for the nation\u2019s economic ills. In turn, they pointed fingers at President Obama, the Federal Reserve and the government generally as the cause of the nation\u2019s economic collapse&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Asked what his plan would be to jump-start the economy and reverse Washington\u2019s paralysis, Perry said he would focus on domestic energy resources&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Meanwhile, Cain \u2014 who for the first time took the stage as a serious contender for the party\u2019s nomination \u2014 talked about his \u201c9-9-9\u201d plan to gut the federal tax code and said he would reduce the federal debt\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Romney cast himself as the most authoritative candidate on the economy, citing his business know-how and 25 years of experience in the private sector to say he will make the difficult decisions necessary to revive the economy\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Some second-tier hopefuls seeking to break out of the pack, namely Rep. Michele Bachmann (Minn.) and former House speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.), were the most critical of the government\u2019s size and role\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Former senator Rick Santorum (Pa.) said he would repeal \u201cevery regulation\u201d the Obama administration has put into law&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;The debate\u2019s opening hour was notable for the lack of sniping between the candidates, although former Utah governor Jon Huntsman Jr. took a swipe at Cain, a former chief executive of Godfather\u2019s Pizza. Of his \u201c9-9-9\u201d plan, Huntsman said: \u201cI thought it was a catchy phrase when I first heard it.
