{"id":5996,"date":"2011-10-01T00:09:40","date_gmt":"2011-10-01T07:09:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=5996"},"modified":"2011-10-01T00:09:40","modified_gmt":"2011-10-01T07:09:40","slug":"will-a-bill-against-chinas-currency-manipulation-survive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/10\/01\/will-a-bill-against-chinas-currency-manipulation-survive\/","title":{"rendered":"Will a bill against China&#8217;s currency manipulation survive?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">One of the prime reasons we have such a trade imbalance with China is that China manipulates the value of their currency.&#160; That makes manufacturing in China less expensive than it is in other industrialized nations and exporting to China more expensive.&#160; This is an unethical practice that violates the terms of our trade agreements, but to date, the US has taken no punitive action.&#160; A bill to correct that appears to be sailing through the Senate, but can it survive the powerful forces arrayed against it?<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"1Currency\" border=\"0\" alt=\"1Currency\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/1Currency.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"229\" \/>Senator Charles Schumer said overwhelming support has emerged in the Senate for legislation letting U.S. companies seek duties on imports from China to compensate for the effects of a weak yuan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>This bill is on a fast track for passage in the Senate<\/strong>,\u201d Schumer, a New York Democrat, said today on a conference call with other lawmakers. \u201cOnce it passes the Senate, it\u2019s going to be hard for the House to block it. I\u2019m optimistic this bill can get to the president\u2019s desk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Senate is scheduled to debate the legislation next week. Besides Schumer, senators backing the bill include Democrats Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan and Republicans Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Jeff Sessions of Alabama. Sherrod Brown (Ohio) and Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), that would slap tariffs on imports from China and other countries that artificially keep their currency low.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the real target may be Republican senators<\/strong> \u2014 and presidential contenders \u2014 who are leaning in favor of the bill.<\/p>\n<p>The Club for Growth has urged lawmakers to vote no on the bill, warning that <strong>the vote will be included in the group\u2019s 2011 Congressional Scorecard, used to measure how fiscally conservative they are<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSherrod Brown\u2019s bill would result in higher costs to American consumers, and would be devastating to economic growth,\u201d Club for Growth President Chris Chocola said in a statement. \u201cStarting a trade war with China will have no winners and many losers.
