{"id":5886,"date":"2011-09-19T00:24:32","date_gmt":"2011-09-19T07:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=5886"},"modified":"2011-09-19T00:24:32","modified_gmt":"2011-09-19T07:24:32","slug":"do-away-with-the-debt-ceiling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/09\/19\/do-away-with-the-debt-ceiling\/","title":{"rendered":"Do away with the debt ceiling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Long before Republicans used it to perpetrate economic terrorism by kidnapping the good faith and credit of the US, I thought the debt ceiling was a foolish idea.&#160; Our debt, proportionally to GDP, has been much higher, and the debt ceiling has never prevented Congress from spending one thin dime.&#160; The only purpose it has ever served has been to facilitate political posturing, until Republicans used it to blackmail the nation.&#160; I\u2019m not the only one, who things we should scrap it.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"19DebtCeiling\" border=\"0\" alt=\"19DebtCeiling\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/19DebtCeiling.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"231\" \/>Representatives Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Hank Johnson (D-GA) and Jim Moran (D-VA) have introduced <strong>legislation to completely eliminate the federal debt ceiling<\/strong>, but the bill has little chance of survival with Republicans in control of the House.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The debt ceiling is truly arbitrary and has nothing to do with the deficit,&quot; Nadler said in a statement. &quot;<strong>The debt ceiling does not prevent the United States from incurring new debts<\/strong>, <strong>but has become a cudgel with which Republicans are holding our economy hostage and punishing the millions of Americans who are struggling<\/strong>.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Public opinion of Congress plummeted after the contentious federal debt ceiling debate in July.
