Those events set in motion the spiral that resulted in the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).<\/p>\n<p>In the Great Recession that followed this Wall Street-driven meltdown, 14 million Americans lost their jobs and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/2011\/03\/middle_class_assault.html\" target=\"_blank\">$20 trillion in wealth was destroyed<\/a>. However, the candidates on stage during last night\u2019s Republican presidential primary debate seem to be suffering from a severe case of amnesia when it comes to the financial crisis, as several of them called for repealing the Dodd-Frank financial reform law, with Texas Gov.
