{"id":5384,"date":"2011-07-14T02:03:25","date_gmt":"2011-07-14T09:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=5384"},"modified":"2011-07-14T02:03:25","modified_gmt":"2011-07-14T09:03:25","slug":"cantor-lied-about-debt-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/07\/14\/cantor-lied-about-debt-talks\/","title":{"rendered":"Cantor Lied About Debt Talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Republicans are desperate to save face in their debt ceiling debacle.&#160; Warfare within the Republican Party has broken out between Republicans running scared from Wall Street and Republicans running scared from their own brown-shirts.&#160; When today\u2019s meeting was essentially over, Obama was wrapping it up, but having trouble because Cantor interrupted him several times.&#160; Finally Obama got up&#160; and left.&#160; Cantor is lying to try to excuse his own desertion of debt talks in mid-stream.&#160; Look how this has imbued Republicans with fear.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; float: left\" title=\"Republican Kool Aid\" alt=\"Republican Kool Aid\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Republican-Kool-Aid.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"360\" \/>President Obama abruptly left debt negotiations with congressional leaders Wednesday at the White House when a top Republican said there was no longer time to engage in the large-scale deficit reduction discussions the White House is now seeking as part of a vote to raise the nation&#8217;s debt ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>The flare-up came at the end of the nearly two-hour session during which House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) told the president that Congress should instead consider a series of debt ceiling votes based on spending cuts that already have been identified. Talks could then continue to identify additional cuts for subsequent votes, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans have refused Democrats&#8217; call for taxes on the wealthy. The president responded by ending the meeting, sources said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I suggested we were so far apart I didn&#8217;t see in the time before us how we get to where he wants us to be,&quot; Cantor told reporters after the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Obama warned Cantor not to set such an ultimatum, and according to congressional and administration aides repeated his vow to veto legislation that would extend the debt ceiling only for a short period.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The president told me, &#8216;Eric, don&#8217;t call my bluff. In short, the problem is that Republicans could not have achieved what they did in the 2010 elections by depending on the votes of those whom they actually serve.&#160; There aren\u2019t that many millionaires, billionaires and corporate criminals.&#160; So they swelled their ranks by empowering every flavor or extremist they could lure into the party.&#160; I hope the leadership will be able to bring their storm troopers into line.&#160; Wall Street will mobilize their greed.&#160;
