Gov. Andre Bauer, who is running for the Republican nomination for governor, held a town hall meeting yesterday where he argued government should be tougher on families whose children receive free and reduced-price lunches. Bauer said that parents should be required to \u201cpass drug tests or attend parent-teacher conferences or PTA meetings.\u201d To make this argument, however, he compared people<\/font> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesunnews.com\/575\/story\/1276292.html\" target=\"_blank\">receiving government assistance to stray animals<\/a><font color=\"#000000\">: <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\"><font color=\"#000000\">\u201c<span style=\"font-weight: bold\">My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed. You\u2019re facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don\u2019t think too much further than that. And so what you\u2019ve got to do is you\u2019ve got to curtail that type of behavior. They don\u2019t know any better<\/span>,\u201d Bauer said. [&#8230;]<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\"><font color=\"#000000\">Later in his speech, Bauer said, \u201cI can show you a bar graph where free and reduced lunch has the worst test scores in the state of South Carolina,\u201d adding, \u201c<span style=\"font-weight: bold\">You show me the school that has the highest free and reduced lunch, and I\u2019ll show you the worst test scores, folks.
