{"id":5363,"date":"2011-07-11T00:51:55","date_gmt":"2011-07-11T07:51:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=5363"},"modified":"2011-07-11T00:51:55","modified_gmt":"2011-07-11T07:51:55","slug":"face-planting-on-tax-cut-propaganda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/07\/11\/face-planting-on-tax-cut-propaganda\/","title":{"rendered":"Face Planting on Tax Cut Propaganda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Republican politicians depend so heavily on the ignorance of their sheeple that on occasion, their own talking points come back to bite them on the butt.&#160; This a prime example of such an occurrence, because, in their zeal to justify even more tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, they have proven that the truth is the opposite of the point they wanted to make.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: right; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"11SocialismRich\" border=\"0\" alt=\"11SocialismRich\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/11SocialismRich.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"252\" \/>&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2011\/05\/10\/173942\/boehner-kennedy-taxes\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Boehner<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font>, <a href=\"http:\/\/firedoglake.com\/2009\/02\/01\/newsflash-ronald-reagan-raised-taxes-you-idiots\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jim DeMint<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font>, Rush Limbaugh and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iddquwGpXM0\" target=\"_blank\">Scott Brown<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font>, along with several other Republicans, have <strong>praised Democratic President John F. Kennedy as a kind of Democratic model, because one of his first acts as president was to pass a tax cut that lowered rates even for the richest Americans<\/strong>.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">This is true. Kennedy did slash the top marginal tax rate \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2011\/05\/10\/173942\/boehner-kennedy-taxes\/\" target=\"_blank\">all the way down to 70%<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font>. And that&#8217;s just the beginning:<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u2013 The tax reform passed after Kennedy\u2019s death cut <strong>the top marginal tax rate from 90 percent to 70 percent<\/strong>, twice today&#8217;s top rate of 35 percent. Kennedy explicitly called for a top rate of 65 percent, but added that it should be set at 70 percent if certain deductions weren&#8217;t phased out at the top of the income scale. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u2013 <strong>Kennedy called for U.S. corporations to be taxed on all their profits, earned anywhere in the world<\/strong>, rather than the current system of allowing them to defer taxation until they bring those profits home. &quot;The undesirability of continuing deferral is underscored where deferral has served as a shelter for tax escape through the unjustifiable use of tax havens such as Switzerland,&quot; Kennedy said in 1961. During Kennedy&#8217;s time in office, corporate taxes made up more than 20 percent of total revenue. Today, it&#8217;s less than ten percent.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u2013 <strong>Kennedy called for cutting tax preferences for the oil and gas industries<\/strong>, saying in 1963 that, &quot;while these are complex as well as controversial problems, we cannot shrink from a frank appraisal of governmental policies and tax subsidies in this area.&quot; Republicans have been adamantly opposed to cutting subsidies for oil and gas companies.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u2013 <strong>Kennedy called for limiting itemized deductions for the rich, saying that they should receive the same benefit for things like charitable giving &quot;as everyone else,&quot; instead of preferential treatment (which they still receive)<\/strong>.
