Rather, it signifies the second full moon within a single month \u2014 hence the phrase, &#8220;once in a blue moon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/blue-moon-super-moon-pictures-august-2023\/\">What is a supermoon?<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The &#8220;supermoon&#8221; phenomenon occurs when the moon&#8217;s orbit is closest to Earth at the same time the moon is full. While around 25% of full moons are supermoons, just 3% of full moons are blue moons,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/moon.nasa.gov\/news\/197\/super-blue-moons-your-questions-answered\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to NASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On average, supermoons are about 16% brighter than an average moon.
