{"id":5275,"date":"2011-07-01T02:19:03","date_gmt":"2011-07-01T09:19:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=5275"},"modified":"2011-07-01T02:19:03","modified_gmt":"2011-07-01T09:19:03","slug":"ryan-let-them-eat-koch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/07\/01\/ryan-let-them-eat-koch\/","title":{"rendered":"Ryan: Let Them Eat Koch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">More and more Americans are learning what it is to be hungry, and our Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), aka food stamps, provides a lifeline that does not meet the need, but keeps it from being catastrophic for millions of Americans.&#160; Now, every penny government spends on a hungry child is a penny Republicans can\u2019t give to a millionaire, billionaire or corporate criminal.&#160; The Republican solution, proposed by Paul Ryan, is to convert SNAP to a block grant program.&#160; This would give the money to to governors, so Republicans like Brewer, Kasich, Perry, Scott, Snyder and Walker can deprive hungry people and divert the funds to their cronies. Ryan\u2019s excuse is the Republican lie that SNAP is bogged down with massive fraud.&#160; What of the poor? Ryan, from Republican Versailles, would let the eat Koch.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"RyanLies\" border=\"0\" alt=\"RyanLies\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/RyanLies.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"311\" \/>In addition to releasing a radical budget that dismantled Medicare while likely raising taxes on the middle class, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) has <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/politics\/2011\/04\/15\/158910\/ryan-budget-no-food\/\" target=\"_blank\">suggested a radical reworking<\/a> of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamps). Under his plan, which would simply block grant SNAP to state governments, \u201cSNAP would largely lose the ability to respond to rising need, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/cms\/index.cfm?fa=view&amp;id=3450\" target=\"_blank\">forcing states during economic downturns to cut benefits<\/a> or create waiting lists for needy families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In order to build support for his dismantling of the food safety net, Ryan has been <a href=\"http:\/\/povertyandpolicy.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/12\/big-myths-used-to-sell-food-stamp-block-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\">spreading falsehoods regarding SNAP<\/a>.
