{"id":5201,"date":"2011-06-25T04:27:01","date_gmt":"2011-06-25T11:27:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=5201"},"modified":"2011-06-25T04:27:44","modified_gmt":"2011-06-25T11:27:44","slug":"why-republicans-bailed-on-debt-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/06\/25\/why-republicans-bailed-on-debt-talks\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Republicans Bailed on Debt Talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Yesterday I wrote about how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/?p=5197\" target=\"_blank\">Republicans abandoned the debt talks<\/a>, when it has seemed they were making progress.\u00a0 Since then Democrats in the meeting have spoken out explained, just what was on the table\u00a0 that got Cantor\u2019s and Kyl\u2019s panties in such a big bunch that they feared to even discuss it.\u00a0 The reasons won\u2019t surprise you.\u00a0 The pettiness may.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; float: right;\" title=\"GOPcrybaby\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/GOPcrybaby.jpg\" alt=\"GOPcrybaby\" width=\"276\" height=\"273\" align=\"right\" \/>Not even a surprise anymore&#8230; this is what caused Eric Cantor to bolt from the debt-ceiling negotiations entirely, rather than <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2011\/06\/top-dems-provide-fresh-detail-on-high-income-tax-proposal-that-led-gop-to-abandon-debt-talks.php\" target=\"_blank\">have to listen to such scary stories<\/a><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\"> <\/span>: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Democrats want to <strong>close tax loopholes that benefit oil companies<\/strong>, and <strong>eliminate a tax preference that gives corporate aircraft a friendlier depreciation schedule than commercial aircraft<\/strong>. Additionally, Van Hollen said, Democrats were proposing to <strong>phase out tax deductions and certain credits for people making more than $500,000 a year<\/strong>. These would be paired with a <strong>reduction in the tax burden on lower earners<\/strong>, by eliminating existing limitations on their deductions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;Folks with over $500,000, we&#8217;re going to phase out your deductions and some of your tax credit,&#8221; Van Hollen said. [&#8230;]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So brave, brave Eric Cantor left in a huff. Hey, we&#8217;re in a time of national crisis and everything, but reduce tax breaks for the rich, making them share the burden ever-so-slightly? <strong>Oh, we can&#8217;t have <span style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>that<\/em><\/span><\/strong>&#8230;
