{"id":5174,"date":"2011-06-22T00:45:21","date_gmt":"2011-06-22T07:45:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=5174"},"modified":"2011-06-22T00:45:21","modified_gmt":"2011-06-22T07:45:21","slug":"republican-leaders-oppress-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/06\/22\/republican-leaders-oppress-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"Republican Leaders Oppress Workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Anytime workers try to unionize, management almost invariably stalls to delay the vote as long as possible to bully, bribe and blackmail.&#160; The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) set in place a new rule to accelerate the process of holding a vote to unionize.&#160; Needless to say, The Republican Party have their panties in a bunch and are having fits.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/22labor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: right; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"22labor\" border=\"0\" alt=\"22labor\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/22labor_thumb.jpg\" width=\"362\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a>Today, the National Labor Relations Board <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2011-06-21\/votes-to-unionize-would-be-harder-to-block-under-proposed-rules-from-nlrb.html\" target=\"_blank\">announced a new rule<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font> aimed at speeding up the process for union elections, in an attempt to prevent employers from using the various tactics they break out to delay and ultimately undermine unionization drives. According to research by John-Paul Ferguson of Stanford Business School, 35 percent of the time that workers file a petition for a union election, the election does not occur due to the many steps that employers take \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calaborfed.org\/index.php\/site\/page\/131\/\" target=\"_blank\">including bringing in anti-union consultants<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font> \u2014 to delay elections for weeks, if not years.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Currently, the average time between workers filing a petition for an election and the election taking place <a href=\"http:\/\/mobile.nytimes.com\/article?a=806602&amp;f=23\" target=\"_blank\">is 58 days<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font>, ample time for employers to engage in coercion and intimidation, or to fire pro-union workers (which happens in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calaborfed.org\/index.php\/site\/page\/131\/\" target=\"_blank\">25 percent of union drives<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font>). But congressional Republicans \u2014 who are whipped into an uproar by any step that favors workers over corporations \u2014 still screamed bloody murder over the change:<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">HOUSE LABOR COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN JOHN KLINE (R-MN) [Murdoch delinked] \u201curged the [NLRB] to \u2018scrap\u2019 what he called a \u2018reckless\u2019 and \u2018job-destroying agenda.\u201d \u201c<span style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Not only will this misguided proposal to expedite union elections undermine an employer\u2019s lawful right to communicate with his or her employees, it will cripple a worker\u2019s ability to make an informed decisio<\/strong><\/span>n,\u201d he said.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">SEN.
