{"id":5122,"date":"2011-06-16T01:58:53","date_gmt":"2011-06-16T08:58:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=5122"},"modified":"2011-06-16T01:58:53","modified_gmt":"2011-06-16T08:58:53","slug":"no-vote-for-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/06\/16\/no-vote-for-you\/","title":{"rendered":"No Vote for YOU!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Republicans have an election problem.&#160; Add up millionaires, billionaires, corporate criminals, racists and other bigots, Supply-side pseudo-Christians, and other assorted wing-nuts, and they have only about 20% of the electorate, or less.&#160; In addition they get votes from people they can fool into thinking that they will represent them.&#160; That still falls short.&#160; Therefore their success comes from preventing as many of those that they cannot fool from voting, so they are working hard to make sure that, if you won\u2019t vote for them, there will be no vote for you.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Joan McCarter illustrates that point.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto\" title=\"16no_vote\" alt=\"16no_vote\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/16no_vote.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"248\" \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">There&#8217;s one thing that the modern-day GOP and teabaggers have in common with our founding fathers: the idea that voting should be restricted to the &quot;right&quot; people, the people who &quot;deserve&quot; to have a say in how government functions. If they had their way, only white, landed, middle-aged and older men would vote. They&#8217;re doing their damnedest <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/justice\/2011\/06\/13\/243178\/maine-gop-war-on-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\">to figure out how to make that happen<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font>. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">For nearly four decades, Maine has been one of eight states which provides same-day voter registration to voters at the polls. This policy of enfranchising the greatest number of Maine voters is likely to end, however, now that the GOP-controlled state legislature has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/news\/bill-to-end-same-day-registration-approved_2011-06-11.html\" target=\"_blank\">passed a bill ending same-day registration<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font> and Tea Party Gov. Paul LePage is expected to sign it. Worse, state GOP Chairman Charlie Webster explained it was necessary to disenfranchise the thousands of Maine voters who take advantage of same-day registration every election year in order to <a href=\"http:\/\/bangordailynews.com\/2011\/06\/10\/politics\/state-house\/gop-chairman%E2%80%99s-charge-that-democrats-%E2%80%98steal%E2%80%99-election-causes-stir\/?ref=latest\" target=\"_blank\">save Maine from one of his paranoid fantasies<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font>: <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.75in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cIf you want to get really honest, <span style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>this is about how the Democrats have managed to steal elections from Maine people,<\/strong><\/span>\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/news\/Bill-Nemitz-Ballot-box-fraud-GOP-fixes-problem-that-isnt-there_2011-06-10.html\" target=\"_blank\">Webster told a columnist for the Portland Press Herald<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font> in a piece published Friday. \u201c<span style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Many of us believe that the Democrats intentionally steal elections<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Sadly, Maine\u2019s voter disenfranchisement bill is only the latest example of the Republican war on voting that began almost immediately after the GOP took over several statehouses this year.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal;
