The corporate dictatorship of Fitzwalkerstan, formerly Wisconsin, has become emblematic for states in which Republicans control the state house and the legislature.  Their state Supreme Court rules that Walker\u2019s law to bust public employ unions was legal.  The deciding vote came from David Prosser, after his former subordinate \u201cfound\u201d enough \u201cmissing\u201d votes for him to \u201cwin\u201d the recent special election.  The unions are filing suit in federal court.<\/font><\/p>\n

\"16Fitzwalkerstan\"<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

A group of Wisconsin state and municipal workers\u2019 unions filed a federal lawsuit in a bid to block implementation of a bill backed by Governor Scott Walker curbing collective-bargaining rights<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

The state law violates the U.S. constitution by creating a \u201cdisfavored\u201d class of public employees<\/strong> and a \u201cfavored\u201d class consisting of firefighters and law enforcement officials, the unions representing teachers, health-care workers and other public workers, said in a complaint filed yesterday in federal court in Madison. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe distinctions the act makes between \u2018public safety\u2019 and other employees not only lack any rational connection to a legitimate governmental objective, they bear a remarkably close connection to the illegitimate objective of punishing the political opponents and rewarding the political supporters of the governor<\/strong>,\u201d the unions said in the complaint. <\/p>\n

The unions seek a court ruling that parts of the law are unconstitutional and an order preventing the state from implementing those parts. <\/p>\n

Wisconsin\u2019s Supreme Court on June 14 rejected a county judge\u2019s ruling invalidating the measure. <\/p>\n

A first-term Republican, Walker signed the legislation on March 11. It requires annual recertification votes for public employees\u2019 union representation and makes their payment of membership dues voluntary. Firefighters and police officers are exempt\u2026 [emphasis added<\/em>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
