{"id":5018,"date":"2011-06-05T03:36:46","date_gmt":"2011-06-05T10:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=5018"},"modified":"2011-06-05T03:36:46","modified_gmt":"2011-06-05T10:36:46","slug":"a-place-for-republicans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/06\/05\/a-place-for-republicans\/","title":{"rendered":"A Place for Republicans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">We on the left sometimes joke about exporting extreme Republicans to their own country.&#160; Some on the right, such as Rick Perry and Todd Palin, aren\u2019t joking about it, but they want to take their states with them.&#160; But what if there were already a country that perfectly suits the ideals of what Republicans want for America?&#160; There is!&#160; I often disagree with Nicholas Kristof, but this time, he struck gold.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"5GopHome\" border=\"0\" alt=\"5GopHome\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/5GopHome.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"222\" \/>With Tea Party conservatives and many Republicans balking at raising the debt ceiling, let me offer them an example of a nation that lives up to their ideals. <\/p>\n<p>It has among the lowest tax burdens of any major country: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/19\/world\/asia\/19taxes.html\" target=\"_blank\">fewer than 2 percent<\/a> of the people pay any taxes. Government is limited, so that burdensome regulations never kill jobs. <\/p>\n<p>This society embraces traditional religious values and a conservative sensibility. Nobody minds school prayer, same-sex marriage isn\u2019t imaginable, and criminals are never coddled. <\/p>\n<p>The budget priority is a strong military, the nation\u2019s most respected institution. When generals decide on a policy for, say, Afghanistan, politicians defer to them. Citizens are deeply patriotic, and nobody burns flags. <\/p>\n<p>So what is this Republican Eden, this Utopia?
