{"id":4859,"date":"2011-05-17T02:47:17","date_gmt":"2011-05-17T09:47:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=4859"},"modified":"2011-05-17T02:47:17","modified_gmt":"2011-05-17T09:47:17","slug":"fec-faith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/05\/17\/fec-faith\/","title":{"rendered":"FEC Faith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">In the matter of John Ensign the FEC ignored the advice of their general counsel and opted not to charge Ensign with violation election law.&#160; The reason, according to an unnamed official is that Ensign told them it was legal, and they take people at their word.&#160; Say what?&#160; If they are going to take such matters on faith, it defeats the purpose of the FEC.&#160; But is that the real reason?<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; float: left\" title=\"17FEC\" alt=\"17FEC\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/17FEC.png\" width=\"360\" height=\"360\" \/>A Federal Elections Commission official <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/05\/14\/us\/politics\/14ensign.html\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> the New York Times that <strong>the commission took former Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) at his word<\/strong> when he told them the $96,000 payment his parents gave to his mistress and her husband was a &quot;gift&quot; and not &quot;severance,&quot; which would have made it illegal.<\/p>\n<p>As TPM <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2011\/05\/ensign_called_parents_payment_to_lover_severance_until_lawyer_told_him_not_to.php\" target=\"_blank\">pointed out last week<\/a>, the Senate Ethics report on Ensign found that the Nevada Republican called the payout a &quot;severance&quot; in his original statement until his lawyer said that would raise criminal issues. &quot;If this statement doesn&#8217;t get the attention of the U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office, then nothing will,&quot; his lawyer wrote in an email uncovered by the Ethics Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Now behind the scenes, the FEC is acknowledging that it got taken.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I hate it when people lie to us,&quot; one FEC official told the New York Times. &quot;If somebody submits a sworn affidavit, we usually do not go back and question it, unless we have something else to go on.
