{"id":4800,"date":"2011-05-10T02:27:39","date_gmt":"2011-05-10T09:27:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=4800"},"modified":"2011-05-10T02:27:39","modified_gmt":"2011-05-10T09:27:39","slug":"is-ny-26-a-bellwether","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/05\/10\/is-ny-26-a-bellwether\/","title":{"rendered":"Is NY-26 a Bellwether?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">An interesting race is taking shape in New York\u2019s 26th Congressional District, largely because a Democrat actually has a chance to win in one of the most heavily gerrymandered districts, in favor of Republicans, in the country.&#160; Jane Corwin, the favored Republican, is opposed by Democrat, Kathleen Hochul, and Teabagger, Jack Davis.&#160; Kathleen has been running on her own, while Corwin has been getting help from Boehner and others.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"10NY26\" border=\"0\" alt=\"10NY26\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/10NY26.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"232\" \/>Speaker of The House John Boehner made a quick stop Monday afternoon in Western New York to support Republican Jane Corwin as the race in the 26th congressional district heats up. <\/p>\n<p>At a fund raiser for Corwin&#8217;s campaign at Salvatore&#8217;s Italian Gardens, Boehner said &quot;Washington Democrats are hoping they can steal this election.&quot; He added, &quot;I&#8217;m here to say we have to do everything in our power to win this election.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>Corwin opened the event saying there is &quot;a clear difference between herself and her opponents.&quot; According to Corwin, the other candidates in the race both believe more government is the answer. <\/p>\n<p>With just two weeks left before the May 24th Special Election, <strong>a recent Sienna College poll had Corwin in front with 36% of the vote, Hochul holding 31%, and Davis at 23%<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>Boehner&#8217;s visit shows the kind of resources the GOP is now dedicating to this race. Buffalo State College Professor Bruce Fisher talked to Channel 2 News about the visit.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;<strong>The Republicans desperately want to win this because they&#8217;d like for their Medicare plan not to be the issue, but the problem is their Medicare plan is the issue<\/strong>,&quot; said Fisher.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Corwin supports a Republican party plan that would change Medicare to a government voucher program beginning in 2022<\/strong>\u2026 [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wgrz.com\/news\/article\/120859\/1\/Rep-John-Boehner-Supporting-Jane-Corwin-at-WNY-Event\" target=\"_blank\">WQRZ<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Corwin is the one on the right with the beady eyes and vacuous expression.&#160; In typical Republican fashion, the gap between her claims and truth is more than significant.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"10NY26-2\" border=\"0\" alt=\"10NY26-2\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/10NY26-2.jpg\" width=\"281\" height=\"361\" \/>Read Jane L. Corwin&#8217;s campaign literature, and she appears to be a woman who has managed to have it all.<\/p>\n<p>According to her publicity and fundraising documents, Corwin, a full-time mother of three, also &quot;<strong>spent 36 years as a successful businesswoman<\/strong>&quot; before being elected to the Assembly in 2008.<\/p>\n<p><strong><font color=\"#ff0000\">But since the Republican congressional candidate was 44 when she won election to the Assembly, that would mean she&#8217;s been a &quot;successful businesswoman&quot; since age 8<\/font><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;How can she have been a successful .businesswoman for 36 years before she went into the Assembly when she was only 44 in 2008,&quot; asked Curtis W. Ellis, spokesman for Jack Davis, the Tea Party candidate.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Exaggeration is not unheard of in politics, but this is taking it to an extreme,&quot; added Leonard R. Lenihan, chairman of the Erie County Democratic Party and a supporter of Kathleen C.
