{"id":4632,"date":"2011-04-21T02:46:24","date_gmt":"2011-04-21T09:46:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=4632"},"modified":"2011-04-21T02:46:24","modified_gmt":"2011-04-21T09:46:24","slug":"one-year-later-why-are-we-drilling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/04\/21\/one-year-later-why-are-we-drilling\/","title":{"rendered":"One Year Later: Why Are We Drilling?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Yesterday was the first anniversary of the BP blowout, sponsored by the GOBP and select DINOs.&#160; I would have hoped that we might have made some progress toward safety and environmental sanity in the interim, but sadly, I have nothing good to report.&#160; This is one time when we can\u2019t blame the return to the status quo on Obama and the Democrats.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"21cnnpolldrilling\" border=\"0\" alt=\"21cnnpolldrilling\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/21cnnpolldrilling.png\" width=\"552\" height=\"376\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although there was substantial support for increased offshore oil and gas drilling at the height of the BP disaster, there was a noticeable decline in support\u2014particularly from those who had intensely supported increased drilling. Now, one year after the accident that caused the disaster, it&#8217;s almost as if nothing had ever happened.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Americans may not like being addicted to oil, particularly to foreign oil, but the thing about addiction is that the only thing worse than craving a fix is not getting it<\/strong>. We can talk until we&#8217;re blue in the face about how little sense increased drilling makes as a serious energy strategy, but if the energy debates we have are mainly focused on things like offshore drilling, we&#8217;re doomed. Ultimately, one of two things will stop offshore drilling: either we&#8217;ll deplete resources so much that there isn&#8217;t anything left that can be practically extracted, or we&#8217;ll have an alternative source of energy to fuel our economy that renders offshore drilling moot.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not saying we should roll over and play dead when it comes to drilling.
