{"id":4627,"date":"2011-04-20T03:11:46","date_gmt":"2011-04-20T10:11:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=4627"},"modified":"2011-04-20T03:11:46","modified_gmt":"2011-04-20T10:11:46","slug":"mcclatchymarist-poll-disproves-gop-lies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/04\/20\/mcclatchymarist-poll-disproves-gop-lies\/","title":{"rendered":"McClatchy\/Marist Poll Disproves GOP Lies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Every time Republicans goose step to a microphone, we hear a flood of lies about how they are following the will of the people.&#160; As always, they are lying, but the extent of the lies is surprising.&#160; Even the Tea Party does not want to be included in the Republicans\u2019 Machiavellian scheme to gut Medicare and Medicaid.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"20liar\" border=\"0\" alt=\"20liar\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/20liar.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"311\" \/>Alarmed by rising national debt and increasingly downbeat about their country&#8217;s course, Americans are clear about how they want to attack the government&#8217;s runway budget deficits: raise taxes on the wealthy and keep hands off of Medicare and Medicaid\u2026<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&#8230;On tackling the deficit, voters by a margin of 2-to-1 support raising taxes on incomes above $250,000, with 64 percent in favor and 33 percent opposed.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Independents supported higher taxes on the wealthy by <strong>63<\/strong>-34 percent; Democrats by 83-15 percent; and Republicans opposed by <strong>43<\/strong>-54 percent.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Support for higher taxes rose by 5 percentage points after Obama called for that as one element of his deficit-reduction strategy last week. Opposition dropped by 6 points. The poll was conducted before and after the speech.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>Americans clearly don&#8217;t want the government to cut Medicare, the government health program for the elderly, or Medicaid, the program for the poor<\/strong>. Republicans in the House of Representatives voted last week to drastically restructure and reduce those programs, while Obama calls for trimming their costs but leaving them essentially intact.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Voters oppose cuts to those programs by <strong><font color=\"#ff0000\">80-18 percent<\/font><\/strong>. <strong>Even among conservatives, only 29 percent supported cuts<\/strong>, and 68 percent opposed them.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Public views are more mixed on cutting defense spending, with 44 percent supporting cuts and 54 percent opposed. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">One dividing line is education: College graduates want to cut defense spending by 63-36 percent. Non-college graduates oppose cutting the Pentagon by 61-36 percent.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">No matter how the government tackles its deficits and debt, Americans don&#8217;t want it to borrow any more. By 69-24 percent, voters oppose raising the legal ceiling for debt. That includes Democrats, who oppose it by 53-36 percent, independents, who oppose it by 74-22 percent, and Republicans, who oppose it by 79-16 percent.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Other findings: <\/font><\/p>\n<ul style=\"line-height: normal; margin-top: 0in; padding-left: 0px; unicode-bidi: embed; direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 0.75in\" type=\"disc\">\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-family: \"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Only 44 percent of voters approve of Obama&#8217;s job performance, while 49 percent disapprove. That was down from 48 percent approval in January, and marked the 17th straight month that his approval has been below 50 percent;<\/font><\/span> <\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-family: \"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Only 34 percent of voters approve, and 61 percent disapprove, of the way he&#8217;s handling the budget deficit, projected to total about $1.6 trillion this year;<\/font><\/span> <\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-family: \"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Only 30 percent approve of the way Republicans in Congress are doing their job, while 63 percent disapprove.<\/font><\/span> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Underlying it all, Americans are in a pessimistic mood. Fewer than one in three \u2014 32 percent of registered voters \u2014 think the country&#8217;s headed in the right direction, while 63 percent think it&#8217;s headed in the wrong direction.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Among all adults, including non-voters, the tally is 31-64 percent, the poorest since November 2007 at the onset of the Great Recession\u2026 [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/2011\/04\/18\/112386\/poll-best-way-to-fight-deficits.html\" target=\"_blank\">McClatchy DC<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">The only dark side of the poll is the part of the debt&#160; ceiling, however the split between educated and uneducated show the need to inform the public.&#160; With Republicans making like it\u2019s no big deal and Democrats, like it is, folks don\u2019t know who to believe unless they are astute enough to already understand the implications.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">I think Obama is 10 points below his overall rating on the deficit is a a reflection on his repeated cave-ins to Republican hostage taking.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Ed Schultz exposes the lies in explicit detail and interviews former Gov.
