{"id":4450,"date":"2011-03-31T04:12:58","date_gmt":"2011-03-31T11:12:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=4450"},"modified":"2011-03-31T04:12:58","modified_gmt":"2011-03-31T11:12:58","slug":"making-monkeys-of-tennessee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/03\/31\/making-monkeys-of-tennessee\/","title":{"rendered":"Making Monkeys of Tennessee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">It could be that the ghosts of William Jennings Bryant and Clarence Darrow will be polishing their legal skills to so battle once again, if Tennessee Republicans have their way.&#160; They are trying to evade the First Amendment prohibition of taxpayer support for religious doctrine to push creationism into the schools while discrediting evolution.&#160; Although it is not creationism, there is one alternative to evolution that is credible.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: right; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"31evol\" border=\"0\" alt=\"31evol\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/31evol.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"267\" \/>Eighty six years after the infamous <a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=4723956\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">Scopes Monkey Trial<\/font><\/a> opened Tennessee classrooms to the teaching of evolution, the state House is trying to slam the door shut again. Tennessee\u2019s House Education Committee approved a bill Tuesday in the name of \u201cacademic freedom,\u201d but in reality, it is a thinly veiled attempt to curtail the teaching of evolution. House Speaker Emeritus Jimmy Naifeh (D) has even taken to calling it \u201c<a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.knoxnews.com\/humphrey\/2011\/03\/whether-its-the-monkey-bill-or.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">the monkey bill<\/font><\/a>.\u201d From the <a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/wapp.capitol.tn.gov\/apps\/billinfo\/BillSummaryArchive.aspx?BillNumber=HB0368&amp;ga=107\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">bill\u2019s summary<\/font><\/a>:<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">This bill prohibits the state board of education and any public elementary or secondary school governing authority, director of schools, school system administrator, or principal or administrator from prohibiting any teacher in a public school system of this state from helping students understand, analyze, critique, and review in an objective manner the scientific strengths and <\/font><span style=\"text-align: left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>scientific weaknesses of existing scientific theories covered in the course being taught, such as evolution and global warming.<\/strong><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Should this bill pass, Tennessee teachers will have official sanction to teach about evolutionary \u201ccontroversies\u201d that simply do not exist.
