{"id":4443,"date":"2011-03-30T03:39:18","date_gmt":"2011-03-30T10:39:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=4443"},"modified":"2011-03-30T03:39:18","modified_gmt":"2011-03-30T10:39:18","slug":"stop-talking-about-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/03\/30\/stop-talking-about-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"Stop Talking About Jobs!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Throughout the closing months of last year we heard an unending mantra of \u201cJobs, Jobs, Jobs\u201d from Republicans as they blamed Democrats for the lingering effects of the Republican recession.&#160; Now that they have taken the House, they have focused on destroying Americans\u2019 safety net, killing jobs in the process, but have made no effort at job creation.&#160; They are such hypocrites that they don\u2019t even want to talk about jobs.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"GOP-Recession\" border=\"0\" alt=\"GOP-Recession\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GOP-Recession.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"270\" \/>One of the mantras of congressional Republicans over the past two years has been to ask, \u201c<strong>Where are the jobs<\/strong>?\u201d House GOP leader John Boehner (OH) made this into a <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/news\/124629-boehner-where-are-the-jobs-refrain-is-part-of-national-lexicon\" target=\"_blank\">theme<\/a> of the campaign last fall. As then-GOP chairman Michael Steele summarized the argument: \u201cAmericans are still asking, \u2018<strong>Where are the jobs?<\/strong>\u2019 \u2026 Washington Democrats still have no answers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This afternoon, Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chair Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) and other progressives took to the floor of the House of Representatives to turn this question back on their Republican colleagues. Ellison and the others asked where all the jobs-creation legislation was, excoriating their conservative colleagues for focusing on legislation like terminating the HAMP program, which would do nothing to create jobs\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;At one point, Rep. Judy Biggert (R-IL) took to the floor to respond to the progressives. She attacked the HAMP program, urging her colleagues to end it, and signaled that she would oppose progressive amendments to the GOP\u2019s bill for ending the mortgage modification program. Then, she incredulously told her colleagues to <strong><font color=\"#ff0000\">stop talking about jobs<\/font><\/strong> and focus rather on the substance of the amendments&#8230; <\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Watch it:<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" height=\"510\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SyDpeyhGvZo?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"640\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p>One would have to wonder what a certain congresswoman who asked at a hearing \u2014 on February 25, 2010 \u2014 \u201c<strong>Where are the jobs<\/strong>?\u201d would think about Biggert\u2019s statement. That congresswoman was Biggert herself.
