Paul Akin (R-MO) provided us with some whoppers.&#160; He won\u2019t tell you what their real goal is.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; float: left\" title=\"20FICA\" alt=\"20FICA\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/20FICA.png\" width=\"360\" height=\"346\" \/>As Republicans gear up to cut social welfare programs like Social Security, <strong>they\u2019ve been careful to craft a public message that says they support these programs, and that their reform efforts are merely attempts <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=124637181\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>to save<\/strong><\/a><strong> the social safety net<\/strong>. \u201cMost young people acknowledge that it\u2019s broken \u2014 it\u2019s broken so badly that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/03\/15\/134533722\/gop-calls-for-social-security-overhaul-grow-louder\" target=\"_blank\">only way we fix it<\/a> and the only way it can continue is we have to look at the eligibility,\u201d Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>But appearing on CSPAN\u2019s Washington Journal this morning, Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO), who sits on the Budget Committee, had a more honest (and negative) assessment of Social Security&#8230; <\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Watch it:<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" height=\"510\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o3dLfa_lwSs?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"640\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Despite Akin\u2019s claim, <strong>Social Security is far more than a tax<\/strong>. After 75 years in existence, the program \u201cremains one of the nation\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/cms\/index.cfm?fa=view&amp;id=3261\" target=\"_blank\">most successful<\/a>, effective, and popular programs.\u201d It has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nber.org\/aginghealth\/summer04\/w10466.html\" target=\"_blank\">dramatically reduced<\/a> elderly poverty \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/cms\/index.cfm?fa=view&amp;id=3261\" target=\"_blank\">nearly half<\/a> of seniors today would be in poverty without it \u2014 and it is the nation\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ourfuture.org\/makingsense\/factsheet\/2010\/social-security\" target=\"_blank\">most effective tool<\/a> at alleviating poverty among people with disabilities. <strong>It does all this while spending <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ourfuture.org\/makingsense\/factsheet\/2010\/social-security\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>less than a penny<\/strong><\/a><strong> per dollar on administrative costs<\/strong>. And despite conservatives\u2019 fear mongering, Social Security is <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2011\/03\/17\/ryan-social-boggled\/\" target=\"_blank\">not going bankrupt<\/a> any time soon\u2026 [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2011\/03\/19\/todd-akin-i-dont-like-social-security\/\" target=\"_blank\">Think Progress<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Of course, what Republicans want to do is to turn the program over to their Bankster buddies, who need more fodder after having transferred much of the equity people had in their homes to the super-rich, and severely wounding the housing market in the process.&#160; If these Banksters get control of our retirement funds, will they manage them for a penny on the dollar like the Social Security Administration does, or will they suck up the wealth from that too?&#160; My money is on the latter.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Even if we do nothing, and the trust fund runs out in 37 years, recipients will still receive 80% of their benefits, far more that they will after 37 years of Bankster attention, if Republicans get their way.&#160; But that would be foolish and unnecessary.&#160; The shortfall can be fixed tomorrow by raising the income cap, and letting those who created the problem share in the burden of fixing it.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Also, remember the biggest Republican lie of all.&#160; Social Security has never added a penny to the defecit, so controlling \u201cgovernment spending\u201d has nothing to do with this.<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Social Security remains the biggest Republican target that that are still afraid to touch, but they keep up the steady stream of propaganda, in the hopes that more people will come to believe the lies, and let them get away with stealing our retirement.&#160; Rep.
