{"id":4320,"date":"2011-03-16T06:34:41","date_gmt":"2011-03-16T13:34:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=4320"},"modified":"2011-03-16T06:34:41","modified_gmt":"2011-03-16T13:34:41","slug":"republicans-on-nuclear-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/03\/16\/republicans-on-nuclear-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Republicans on Nuclear Power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Nowhere on earth does the state take nuclear safety more seriously that in Japan, so as this tragedy unfolds, becoming worse by the hour, we need to take care&#160; that we do not repeat the disaster here.&#160; With that in mind, lets review Republican policy on nuclear power.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; float: right\" title=\"GOPNuke\" alt=\"GOPNuke\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GOPNuke.gif\" width=\"360\" height=\"289\" \/>Commenting on the unfolding nuclear reactor <a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/16\/world\/asia\/16nuclear.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">crisis<\/font><\/a> at Japan\u2019s Fukushima Daiichi plant, John McCain [propaganda delinked] (R-AZ) said recently:<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">I think what happens now to this power plant as to whether the damage is contained or not will have a direct effect on the future of nuclear power in the United States. Let\u2019s have a little straight talk.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Kicked off by the 9.0 magnitude earthquake which struck the country on Friday, the crisis has already become the worst nuclear accident since the Chernobyl disaster. An ensuing series of explosions and breakdowns has forced workers on site to react with increasingly desperate measures to bring the crisis under control, primarily by pumping seawater into the damaged reactors in an attempt to cool the overheating cores.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Not surprisingly, the crisis has also inspired <a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/2011-03-15-pro-japans-terrible-disaster-is-no-reason-to-stop-building-nucle\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">renewed<\/font><\/a> <a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/2011-03-15-con-nuclear-power-is-expensive-risky-and-some-of-its-proponents-\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">debate<\/font><\/a> over the future of nuclear technology here in America. It\u2019s <strong>worth noting that, before offering \u201cstraight talk\u201d on nuclear energy, McCain and fellow Republicans \u2014 including Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK), and Sen.
