{"id":4258,"date":"2011-03-09T06:53:16","date_gmt":"2011-03-09T14:53:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=4258"},"modified":"2011-03-09T06:53:16","modified_gmt":"2011-03-09T14:53:16","slug":"tax-corporations-not-cookies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/03\/09\/tax-corporations-not-cookies\/","title":{"rendered":"Tax Corporations, Not Cookies!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Georgia Republicans are taking a serious risk, one that may threaten our national security.&#160; Considering how overextended our military is now, keeping the world safe for autocracy, we may well need to put the Girl Scouts into the battle lines.&#160; To keep their goodwill, Republicans should not be trying to tax their cookies.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"9cookies\" border=\"0\" alt=\"9cookies\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/9cookies.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"211\" \/>Like many states, Georgia is facing a <a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/georgia-politics-elections\/tax-council-recommends-grocery-797997.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">budget shortfall<\/font><\/a>. To address the problem, the legislature is considering a bill that would <a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/georgia-politics-elections\/major-georgia-tax-overhaul-853304.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">expand the tax base<\/font><\/a> by doing things like reinstating a sales tax on food and raising the tax on gasoline. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Many Georgians would be <a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/georgia-politics-elections\/lawmakers-eye-potential-300-295246.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">adversely affected<\/font><\/a> by the tax hikes on basic commodities, including the Girl Scouts, who are worried about the \u201csignificant financial impact\u201d the bill would have on the revenue they raise through cookie sales, which would now be subject to sales tax. Over the weekend, Marilyn Midyette, the CEO of Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta, sent an email to supporters warning them that the new tax on their cookies \u201cwould <a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ajc.com\/political-insider-jim-galloway\/2011\/03\/07\/your-morning-jolt-girl-scouts-ticked-over-cookie-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">take money away from Girl Scout programs<\/font><\/a>\u201c:<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><span style=\"text-align: left\"><strong><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">This significant financial impact would take money away from Girl Scout programs, camp support, financial aid and proceeds from the sale that support troop activities and community service projects<\/font><\/strong><\/span><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u2026[P]lease contact your State House Representative and State Senator TODAY and express your concern in a courteous, Scout-like manner about our Scouts being taxed. Please reference House Bill 385. Sample letters have been provided on the left to make it easy to copy and paste into your own email. There are sample letters for girls as well as for parents and volunteers. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">But while Girl Scouts and anyone who buys groceries and gasoline is forced to sacrifice, domestic and foreign corporations in Geogia are being lavished with a tax break.
