{"id":4224,"date":"2011-03-05T06:19:44","date_gmt":"2011-03-05T14:19:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=4224"},"modified":"2011-03-05T06:19:44","modified_gmt":"2011-03-05T14:19:44","slug":"cut-the-deficit-by-437-billion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/03\/05\/cut-the-deficit-by-437-billion\/","title":{"rendered":"Cut the Deficit by $437 Billion!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">A while back I posted a link to a University of Maryland research study and several of us tried our hands at balancing the budget.&#160; We all did better than Congress.&#160; Now the results of that study are out and it turns out that what the American people would do falls to the left of both political parties.&#160; Meanwhile, Republicans fight to impose their draconian ideas, and heroes, like Oregon\u2019s Jeff Merkley oppose them.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: right; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"5republican screw US\" border=\"0\" alt=\"5republican screw US\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/5republican-screw-US.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"308\" \/>&#8230;<strong>Don&#8217;t you love seeing these rich, fat-cat gasbags demanding cuts in programs for the middle and lower classes while Bush&#8217;s tax cuts for the rich rain down on them millions of dollars in fool&#8217;s gold?<\/strong> The GOP is waging war to create a two-tiered class system in America based solely on cash: the very wealthy and the poor. Good-bye to the middle class and all that.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&#160;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">WSJ [Murdoch delinked]: <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">House Speaker John Boehner said Thursday that he&#8217;s determined to offer a budget this spring that curbs Social Security and Medicare, despite the political risks, and that Republicans will try to persuade voters that sacrifices are needed.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Boehner said House Republicans would offer a budget for the next fiscal year that sets goals for bringing the programs&#8217; costs under control. But he acknowledged that Americans aren&#8217;t yet ready to embrace far-reaching changes to Social Security and Medicare because they aren&#8217;t aware of the magnitude of the financial problems. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&quot;People in Washington assume that Americans understand how big the problem is, but <strong>most Americans don&#8217;t have a clue,&quot; Mr. Boehner said<\/strong>, speaking in his Capitol office. &quot;I think it&#8217;s incumbent on us, if we are serious about dealing with the big challenges, that we go out and help Americans understand how big the problem is that faces us.&quot;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Cryin&#8217; Boehner followed that up by saying we <\/font><a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/8301-503544_162-20009192-503544.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\" color=\"#0066cc\">should raise the retirement age to 70:<\/font><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">House Republican Leader John Boehner said in an <a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pittsburghlive.com\/x\/pittsburghtrib\/news\/s_688102.html%20\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review<\/font><\/a> out today that he would back <strong>raising the Social Security retirement age to 70<\/strong> for those who will not retire for another 20 years. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">The comment &#8211; along with Boehner&#8217;s statement that the financial reform compromise reached last Friday creates a bill that amounts to &quot;killing an ant with a nuclear weapon&quot; &#8212; has drawn the attention of Democrats eager to cast the GOP as uncaring about the problems of average Americans. Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee National Press Secretary Ryan Rudominer told Hotsheet in response to the comment that the Republican &quot;blueprint&quot; is to privatize Social Security and Medicare, citing the budget of Representative Paul Ryan (R &#8211; Wis.). (Republicans are quick to note that while Ryan&#8217;s &quot;blueprint&quot; for the future has advocated such measures, he has not put them forward as the House Republican budget.)<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Senator Jeff Merkley <\/font><a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/plum-line\/2011\/03\/senator_merkley_gop_created_th.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\" color=\"#0066cc\">comes out fighting against the GOP:<\/font><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Senator Jeff Merkley <a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/story\/2011\/03\/03\/952212\/-Kill-the-GOP-Plan-to-Kill-Jobs\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">opens fire<\/font><\/a> on the House GOP plan for budget cuts in some of the harshest terms I&#8217;ve heard yet: <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.75in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>The GOP budget plan will destroy 700,000 jobs<\/strong>. The last thing our nation can afford right now is further job losses. We need to be creating jobs, not destroying jobs. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.75in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong>There are common-sense budget cuts that could reduce our deficits without wrecking the economy or attacking working families<\/strong>. We can start by <strong>cutting back on the bonus tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires<\/strong> that Republican leaders insisted on just ten weeks ago. We could <strong>end tax subsidies for oil companies<\/strong> and save tens of billions of dollars in the process. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.75in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Republican House Speaker John <strong>Boehner summarized his perspective on the Republican budget as follows: <font color=\"#ff0000\">if people might lose their jobs, &quot;so be it.&quot;<\/font><\/strong><font color=\"#ff0000\"> <\/font>You might think the House Republican leaders would show some humility after their failed agenda turned record surpluses into massive deficits in 2001, or after their policies reduced the wages of working Americans during the modest expansion in the middle of the decade, or after they burned down the economy with unregulated derivatives and predatory mortgage securities in 2008. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.75in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Apparently not. <strong>Their proposals are exactly the same: give massive tax cuts to the wealthiest, shred the safety net, and eliminate investments that would help restore American economic leadership<\/strong>. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Will Democrats heed his call? Don&#8217;t hold your breath. Merkley tried to lead the important fight to reform filibuster rules back in January, and he was sold out by Democratic leadership, who made a &quot;handshake&quot; agreement with Republicans to quietly abandon their abuse of the filibuster. Now we have this <a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2011\/03\/04\/filibuster-war\/\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">new obstructionist group of eight Republicans who will block every bill they don&#8217;t like in the Senate.<\/font><\/a> So much for handshakes\u2026 [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/crooksandliars.com\/john-amato\/rep-john-crying-boehner-wants-raise-age\" target=\"_blank\">Crooks and Liars<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Well, don\u2019t say I didn\u2019t call it on the filibuster rules. Trusting Republicans is a fool\u2019s errand!&#160; Merkley is right.&#160; There are things we can do to move toward a balanced budget that make sense, and that\u2019s where the University of Maryland Research project comes in.&#160; The research shows that Americans do not want to gut the safety net and do want to increase revenue by restoring some of the excessive welfare Republicans have given to the super-rich.&#160; By doing so, they were able to reduce the deficit by $437 billion, making Cenk\u2019s question all the more poignant.&#160; If they can do it, why can\u2019t Congress?&#160; The answer to that is clear.&#160; The super-rich and criminal corporations own the Republican Party lock, stock, and barrel.&#160; They also own enough DINO Democrats to prevent effective policies when Democrats do have majorities.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">In 2012, we get out chance to gain ground for progressive values.&#160;
