When confronted by Republican pseudo-Christians harassing me to be \u201cpro-life\u201d, I tell them I am and ask them how long they have opposed the death penalty.  After a bit of blustering they say they are for the death penalty, so I tell them they must be pro-death.  The hypocrisy of their positions on the two issues amazes me, but if you think that\u2019s bad, you won\u2019t believe this one!<\/font><\/p>\n

There’s a new bill on the block that may have reached the apex (I hope) of woman-hating craziness. Georgia State Rep. Bobby Franklin\u2014who last year proposed making rape and domestic violence "victims" into "accusers"\u2014has introduced a 10-page bill that would criminalize miscarriages and make abortion in Georgia completely illegal. Both miscarriages and abortions would be potentially punishable by death<\/font><\/em><\/span><\/strong>: any "prenatal murder" in the words of the bill, including "human involvement" in a miscarriage, would be a felony and carry a penalty of life in prison or death<\/strong>. Basically, it’s everything an "pro-life" activist could want aside from making all women who’ve had abortions wear big red "A"s on their chests. <\/font><\/p>\n

Under Rep. Franklin’s bill, HB 1, women who miscarry could become felons if they cannot prove that there was "no human involvement whatsoever in the causation" of their miscarriage.<\/font><\/p>\n

Got that? Prove you didn’t murder your baby, or we might have to kill you<\/strong>. That’s the "pro-life" way<\/strong>.<\/font><\/p>\n

The bill is unlikely to pass, and even if it passes, it will undoubtedly be overturned. Aside from the standard forced-birther absurdities\u2014defining a fetus as a person from the moment of conception; defining abortion as "prenatal murder"; some gratuitous (not to mention ironic) statements about the sanctity of life\u2014it also states that the Supreme Court "had no jurisdiction to hear or decide the case of Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/span>," and because Georgia was not a party to that lawsuit, it "carries no legal effect in Georgia."<\/font><\/p>\n

Courts don’t tend to look too favorably on states that claim the law of the land doesn’t apply to their<\/em><\/span> land<\/strong>\u2026 [emphasis added<\/em>]<\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
