Republican Hate!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Yesterday I was quite pleased for the sake of gay friends that I admire and respect that Barack Obama has instructed DOJ to stop defending DOMA in court, correctly stating that the law is unconstitutional.&#160; This surprised me, because Obama went against his own personal bias.&#160; What didn\u2019t surprise me is the flood of Republican condemnation that followed.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"24NoDOMA\" border=\"0\" alt=\"24NoDOMA\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/24NoDOMA.png\" width=\"362\" height=\"275\" \/>President Obama, in a striking legal and political shift, has determined that the Defense of Marriage Act \u2014 the 1996 law that bars federal recognition of same-sex marriages \u2014 is unconstitutional, and has directed the Justice Department to stop defending the law in court, the administration said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. announced the decision in a letter to members of Congress. In it, he said the administration was taking the extraordinary step of refusing to defend the law, despite having done so during Mr. Obama\u2019s first two years in the White House. <\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe president and I have concluded that classifications based on sexual orientation\u201d should be subjected to a strict legal test intended to block unfair discrimination, Mr. Holder wrote. As a result, he said, a crucial provision of the Defense of Marriage Act \u201cis unconstitutional.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Conservatives denounced the shift, gay rights advocates hailed it as a watershed, and legal scholars said it could have far-reaching implications beyond the marriage law. For Mr. Obama, who opposes same-sex marriage but has said repeatedly that his views are \u201cevolving,\u201d there are political implications as well. Coming on the heels of his push for Congress to repeal the \u201cdon\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u201d law barring the military from allowing gay people to serve openly, the administration\u2019s move seems likely to intensify the long-running cultural clash over same-sex marriage as the 2012 political campaign is heating up\u2026 [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/24\/us\/24marriage.html\">NY Times<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Perhaps the most inoffensive Republican response came from John \u201cAgent Orange\u201d Boehner.&#160; He claims that continuing the defense of DOMA would have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/story\/2011\/02\/23\/948887\/-Boehner-attacks-DOMA-decision,-claims-continuing-defense-would-have-created-jobs\">created jobs<\/a>.&#160; I\u2019ll have a load of that for the front lawn, please!<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">It gets uglier.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: right; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"24GOPDOMA\" border=\"0\" alt=\"24GOPDOMA\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/24GOPDOMA.jpg\" width=\"330\" height=\"263\" \/>Earlier today <a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2011\/POLITICS\/02\/23\/obama.gay.marriage\/?hpt=T2\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">it was reported<\/font><\/a> that President Obama had ordered the Justice Department to stop defending the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">So far, reactions from the Religious Right have been few and far between but we are going to post them here as they trickle in:<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">National Organization for Marriage [NOM delinked]:<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cWe have not yet begun to fight for marriage,\u201d said Brian Brown, president of NOM.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cThe Democrats are responding to their election loss with a series of extraordinary, extra-constitutional end runs around democracy, whether it\u2019s fleeing the state in Wisconsin and Indiana to prevent a vote, or <strong>unilaterally declaring homosexuals a protected class<\/strong> under our Constitution, as President Obama just did,\u201d said Brown. \u201cWe call on the House to intervene to protect DOMA, and to tell the Obama administration they have to respect the limits on their power. This fight is not over, it has only begun!\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&#8230;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cOn the one hand this is a truly shocking extra-constitutional power grab in declaring gay people are a protected class, and it\u2019s also a defection of duty on the part of the President Obama,\u201d said Maggie Gallagher, Chairman of NOM, \u201cOn the other hand, <strong>the Obama administration was throwing this case in court anyway<\/strong>. A truce is nothing more than a surrender.&quot;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Fischer said he was not surprised by the president&#8217;s decision.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&quot;Frankly I was surprised that President <strong>Obama pretended to be a defender of natural marriage<\/strong> as long as he did,&quot; he said.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">He said that the White House move should serve as &quot;a wake-up call to all conservatives that fundamental American values regarding the family are under all-out assault by this administration. It ought to represent a clarion call to man the barricades before we lose what is left of the Judeo-Christian system of values in our public life.&quot;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; Minnery said. &quot;If the administration can pick and choose what laws it defends, which law is next?&quot;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&quot;We would hope Congress uses the tools at its disposal to counter this decision and defend marriage,&quot;
