{"id":4043,"date":"2011-02-09T08:45:38","date_gmt":"2011-02-09T16:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=4043"},"modified":"2011-02-09T08:45:38","modified_gmt":"2011-02-09T16:45:38","slug":"instead-of-jobs-war-on-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/02\/09\/instead-of-jobs-war-on-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Instead of Jobs, War on Women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Throughout the 2010 campaign I heard Republicans campaign on jobs, jobs, jobs, but mow that they own the House, they aren\u2019t about jobs at all.&#160; During the campaign, we seldom heard a peep about abortion, but now that\u2019s the focus of their agenda.&#160; This betrays a dichotomy in the Republican persona.&#160; As much as they campaign on the freedom undisturbed by government interference, that only applies to the freedom of millionaires, billionaires and criminal corporations to exploit the poor and middle classes.&#160; When it comes to individual freedom, like same-sex marriage, women\u2019s reproductive rights, or any other choice not approved by their pseudo-Christian dogma, forget freedom.&#160; Big Brother is watching.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"9choice\" border=\"0\" alt=\"9choice\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/9choice.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"398\" \/>All but invisible during the midterm elections, the abortion debate has returned to Congress. <\/p>\n<p>Invoking the mantra of fiscal restraint that has dominated House action since lawmakers reconvened last month, Republicans began committee work this week on two bills that would <strong>greatly expand restrictions on financing for and access to abortions<\/strong>. Another bill, one that would cut <strong>off federal dollars to women\u2019s health care clinics that offer abortions<\/strong>, is expected to surface later this year. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis House is more pro-life than it\u2019s ever been,\u201d said Representative Joe Pitts, Republican of Pennsylvania and the author of one of the bills to limit money for abortions. <\/p>\n<p>Democrats in both the House and Senate immediately fought back Tuesday, working closely with reproductive rights advocates. They have appropriated the Republican charge from last year that Democrats were working on a liberal policy agenda instead of on job creation and the economy, and turned it on its head. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>This election was about the economy<\/strong>,\u201d said Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, who joined with other Democratic senators Tuesday to decry the House bills Tuesday as needless and intrusive. <\/p>\n<p>Over and over, Democrats said that <strong>by bringing up the abortion issue now, Republicans were going back on their word to focus on the budget<\/strong>\u2026 [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/09\/us\/politics\/09congress.html\" target=\"_blank\">NY Times<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Rachel Maddow had an excellent piece last night that covered this issue and other, discusses the difference between what Republicans say and what they do, and wonders if the Tea Party will make a difference.&#160;
