{"id":40384,"date":"2020-07-10T14:49:59","date_gmt":"2020-07-10T21:49:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=40384"},"modified":"2020-07-10T15:28:32","modified_gmt":"2020-07-10T22:28:32","slug":"friday-fun-plenty-of-perky-non-political-puppets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2020\/07\/10\/friday-fun-plenty-of-perky-non-political-puppets\/","title":{"rendered":"Friday Fun: Plenty of Perky Non-Political Puppets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve all been plagued for too long by the impropriety, imprudence and impudence of Putin&#8217;s Puppet, *Rump \u2013 so today I&#8217;ll try to reclaim the honor of honest, hardworking puppets.<\/p>\n<p>During the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus <em>(aka, Trump Virus)<\/em>, Chicagoan Matt Owens was laid off from his job at the Brookfield Zoo.\u00a0 It was there he designed and created natural-looking toys and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/entertainment\/ct-brookfield-zoo-toy-designers-20140815-column.html\">&#8220;enrichment devices&#8221;<\/a> for the animals both at Brookfield as well as for the Disney Animal Kingdom, and the San Diego and Cincinnati Zoos.<\/p>\n<p>Given Owens&#8217; impressive and extensive resume in the arts, having been a performer and stage designer for numerous theatrical venues in the city, as well as designing numerous puppets for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Lyric Opera and movie director Tim Robbins \u2013 he was looking for an outlet to employ his skills while stuck at home.<\/p>\n<p>Matt and his wife Carla (a librarian) decided creating puppets to use in staging shows would be a good way to utilize his many talents.<\/p>\n<p>Thus was born the <strong><em>&#8220;Lockdown Puppet Theater&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_00_Title.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40385\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_00_Title.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"561\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_00_Title.jpg 561w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_00_Title-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_00_Title-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On any given Saturday afternoon Matt and Carla put on their polished production of Puppetry in their Lakeview neighborhood \u2013 free of charge!<\/p>\n<p>And the cast of characters is impressive!\u00a0 A neighbor and audience regular, Jennifer O&#8217;Brien, asks: \u201cWhere else can you see and hear a Yodeling Toad singing about sushi?\u201d\u00a0 Only in Chicago!<\/p>\n<p>The Yodeling Toad is joined on a rotating basis by over 40 other puppets \u2013 mostly of a circus character \u2013 from a Sword Sallower, Gorilla, Organ Grinder with his Monkey, a Ring Master, Magician, Juggler, Trapeze Artist, Elephant, Acrobats &#8230; and so many more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_GIF.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40386\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_GIF.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"421\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second-floor balcony of their apartment serves as the proscenium with colorful flower boxes flanking both sides and a bright green stage curtain.\u00a0 The shows always include music, singing and oftentimes Matt&#8217;s own bagpipe playing.\u00a0 And it wouldn&#8217;t be complete without Giggles the Clown tell some corny Dad Jokes:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>&#8220;My father was a clown too. All his friends came to his memorial in one car.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat do you call a clown who never sits down? A stand-up comedian.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat kind of birds always stick together? Vel-crows.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Why do you tell actors to &#8216;Break a leg&#8217;?\u00a0 Because they&#8217;re all in a cast.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The majority of the audience are people just running errands, walking their dogs or out for a jog who fortunately happen upon a delightful, colorful and unique entertainment &#8211; and stay for the half-hour show.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_09_Crowd.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40387\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_09_Crowd.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"563\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_09_Crowd.png 563w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_09_Crowd-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_09_Crowd-150x100.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But there are some regulars, including next-door neighbor, 2-year-old Sebron Haley, who comes every Saturday and always has a great view perched on his dad&#8217;s shoulders \u2013 unless he&#8217;s down on the sidewalk dancing to the music.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_08_Boy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_08_Boy.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"562\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_08_Boy.png 562w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_08_Boy-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Puppets_08_Boy-150x100.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 562px) 100vw, 562px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was inspired to dig a little deeper to this perfect example of turning lemons into lemonade by a story I saw on CBS.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the only video of it I can find is one posted on CBS&#8217;s Facebook page.<\/p>\n<p>Besides have Comcast\/Xfinity work on their cable relay box for several hours today &#8211; leaving me high and dry &#8211; I then decided I would try to teach myself how to embed Facebook videos.\u00a0 After trying for over an hour using iFrame and Javascript SKD, I learned all you have to do is just plugin the URL.\u00a0 <em><strong>Geez &#8230; what an idiot!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><script async=\"1\" defer=\"1\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&amp;version=v7.0\" nonce=\"RZckNQr5\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-video\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CBSEveningNews\/videos\/puppet-theater-at-a-time-when-so-many-are-searching-for-an-escape-from-the-coron\/591873428137426\/\" data-width=\"695\">\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CBSEveningNews\/videos\/591873428137426\/\" class=\"fb-xfbml-parse-ignore\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CBSEveningNews\/videos\/591873428137426\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>PUPPET THEATER: At a time when so many are searching for an escape from the coronavirus crisis, a Chicago man\u2019s creations are captivating a city.
