With new insights in the way COVID19 spreads, in the way the virus behaves and in the way to deal with the pandemic every day, it is now more important than ever to safeguard the information we share is accurate and fact-based. We have to inoculate ourselves against the fake news and misinformation that infect our newsfeeds and timelines at this crucial moment by fact-checking.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">For the duration of the pandemic, I will try to give you an overview of the main issues in CoronaCheck, an Australian email newsletter with the latest from around the world concerning the coronavirus.*<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>MORE MISINFORMATION ON FLU VACCINES<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39992\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Flue_vaccine_claims.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Flue_vaccine_claims.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Flue_vaccine_claims-150x300.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Flue_vaccine_claims-75x150.jpg 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Image source: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=050be9a08f&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Facebook<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Inaccurate claims about the flu vaccine and its relationship to the novel coronavirus continue to circulate, despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=43469f82cf&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">best efforts of fact-checkers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This week <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=fcb4d11dd5&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">PolitiFact<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=243a8c4cba&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">factcheck.org<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=57ca4acaa8&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Reuters<\/a> have checked inaccurate claims suggesting that the seasonal jab for the flue leads to false positives in coronavirus tests or even that the jab contains the virus itself. Both suggestions are <strong>incorrect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=5cf9fc8b46&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">PolitiFact<\/a>, a Facebook post stating &#8220;If you have had a flu shot in the last 3-5 years, you will probably test positive&#8221; for COVID-19 was labelled &#8220;nonsense&#8221; by Davidson Hamer, a global health and medicine professor at Boston University.<\/p>\n<p>A claim that the flu vaccine &#8220;has been biologically weaponised to cause coronavirus&#8221; was debunked by <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=52c1cfcd20&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Reuters<\/a>, whose fact-checkers noted: &#8220;There is <strong>no<\/strong> evidence to suggest that the influenza vaccine contains the novel coronavirus or causes COVID-19.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>HYDROCHLOROQUINE AND 5GL<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39991\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Hydrochloroquine_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Hydrochloroquine_1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Hydrochloroquine_1-300x277.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Hydrochloroquine_1-150x139.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Image source: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=a93aa34b54&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Facebook<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Again a claim linking 5G mobile technology to the coronavirus outbreak is being spread on Facebook, this time concerning another controversial item in the disinformation folly, hydroxychloroquine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hydroxychloroquine cures this &#8216;virus&#8217;,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=6b01ecd0e0&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">a Facebook post<\/a> states. &#8220;It just so happens this is the treatment used for radiation sickness!! Let that sink in!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Opponents of 5G have called out radiation sickness as one of the adverse health effects associated with the technology.<\/p>\n<p>Fact-checkers at <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=77877ede21&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Full Fact<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=db5debb2fb&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">PolitiFact<\/a> found there was <strong>no clear evidence<\/strong> that hydroxychloroquine was an effective treatment for COVID-19 and it is <strong>not used<\/strong> to treat radiation sickness either.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>INFODEMIC<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39997\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/infodemic_6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/infodemic_6.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/infodemic_6-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/infodemic_6-150x84.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/h5>\n<p>Fact-checkers and misinformation researchers around the globe not only try to correct the record on false and inaccurate claims around COVID-19 but also attempt to understand and track the spread of the &#8220;infodemic&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=2bf8d1f865&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">On the one hand<\/a>, researchers found that <strong>a quarter<\/strong> of the most viewed COVID-19 videos on YouTube, viewed by millions of users worldwide, contained <strong>misleading<\/strong> information and \u201cmay play a significant role in successfully managing the COVID-19 pandemic,&#8221;\u00a0the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, social media investigators <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=12e3997d16&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">found that <strong>nearly half<\/strong> of all Twitter accounts<\/a> posting about the virus were likely to be <strong>bots<\/strong>, twice as much bot activity as predicted based on previous natural disasters, crises and elections, according to Kathleen M Carley, a researcher with Carnegie Mellon University.<\/p>\n<p>In Australia, the misinformation campaigns seem to be rather successful, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=92e1ee8409&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">one in five surveyed young people<\/a> (18-34) reporting that they think 5G mobile technology is spreading the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">And a brand-new<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centreforresponsibletechnology.org.au\/pro_trump_accounts_coordinated_spread_of_china_bio_weapon_covid_conspiracy_theory\"><strong>Australian<\/strong> report suggests that theory has been amplified on Twitter<\/a> <span style=\"color: #993366;\">through the &#8220;<strong>coordinated<\/strong>&#8221; efforts of clusters of <strong>Pro-Trump, QAnon and Republican partisan accounts<\/strong> (emphasis mine).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">\u00a0&#8220;The whole idea of bots is really quite contentious at the moment, but there&#8217;s really no other conclusion that we can draw from this, other than some of these accounts are using some sort of automation,&#8221; Dr Timothy Graham said, one of the authors of The Australian Institute&#8217;s Centre for Responsible Technology report released today (June first 2020).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">\u00a0&#8220;They might be semi-controlled by humans but how they&#8217;re behaving in these networks, at least in some clusters, is text-book bot-like behaviour. We can&#8217;t know for sure but there&#8217;s overwhelming evidence based on this approach, where groups of accounts repeatedly retweet the same content within one second of each other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>INTERPRETING STATISTICS IN ITALY<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39990\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Italian_fraud_claim.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"627\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Italian_fraud_claim.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Italian_fraud_claim-239x300.jpg 239w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Italian_fraud_claim-120x150.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Image source: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=fce333f4f9&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Facebook<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A claim made by an Italian politician that 96.3 per cent of more than <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=5cc0309ed2&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">32,000<\/a> COVID-19 deaths in his country were actually from other causes is <strong>false<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=01c9e0f9bc&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">according to Full Fact<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The source of the claim turned out to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=3a717f9414&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">report from the Istituto Superiore di Sanit\u00e0 (Higher Institute of Health)<\/a> on April 20 which had found that of 21,551 Italians who had died with COVID-19, just 3.7 per cent had no co-morbidities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This means that 96.3% of the people who had died in Italy after testing positive for the new coronavirus had also suffered from at least one condition,&#8221;\u00a0Full Fact noted. &#8220;It does not mean that the virus did not cause their death.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\">HISTORY REWRITTEN<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39989\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Restrictions_are_not_fascist.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Restrictions_are_not_fascist.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Restrictions_are_not_fascist-172x300.jpg 172w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Restrictions_are_not_fascist-86x150.jpg 86w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><em>Image source:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=cf1e1c25dc&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Facebook<\/a><\/h5>\n<p>A quote <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=d3af2d4d22&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">shared widely on Facebook<\/a> reads &#8220;The best way to take control over a people and control them utterly is to take a little of their freedom at a time, to erode rights by a thousand tiny and almost imperceptible reductions,&#8221;\u00a0and is said to have come from Hitler&#8217;s <em>Mein Kampf<\/em>. &#8220;In this way, the people will not see those rights and freedoms being removed until past the point at which these changes cannot be reversed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A caption accompanying the post (dated May 12) states: &#8220;This is what\u2019s happening to us now \u2026 little by little.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But fact-checkers at <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=967ffd337c&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">PolitiFact<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=ab562edfd2&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Reuters<\/a> note that comparing current coronavirus restrictions to Hitler&#8217;s ideology is based on <strong>misattribution<\/strong>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=0b9ff9a69a&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History<\/a>, which studies 20th-century German history, told <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=03e090dea1&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Reuters<\/a> the words were misattributed and had &#8220;never been written in <em>Mein Kampf&#8221;.<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=b66430b3d2&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">PolitiFact<\/a> noted that the quote also <strong>misrepresents<\/strong> Hitler\u2019s beliefs and actions. &#8220;Instead of small changes that slowly eroded the rights of the German people, Hitler made large changes over a short period.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>FROM WASHINGTON, D.C.<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39994\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Trump_tweeting.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Trump_tweeting.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Trump_tweeting-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Trump_tweeting-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Trump_tweeting-96x96.jpg 96w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Trump_tweeting-24x24.jpg 24w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Trump_tweeting-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Trump_tweeting-48x48.jpg 48w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Trump_tweeting-64x64.jpg 64w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This week, an official fact-check warning label by Twitter appears to have been a tipping point for Mr Trump who responded to having his tweets about postal voting labelled by the social media platform by <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=0b778a602c&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">signing an executive order<\/a> intended to challenge protections provided by US law that prevent social media companies being sued over what gets posted to their sites.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In a country that has long cherished the freedom of expression, we cannot allow a limited number of online platforms to hand pick the speech that Americans may access and convey on the internet,&#8221;\u00a0Mr Trump defended <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=bc055499b0&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">his order<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump\u00a0then went on to claim the warning label placed on his tweets were done in a matter &#8220;that clearly reflects political bias&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As has been reported, Twitter seems never to have placed such a label on another politician\u2019s tweet,&#8221;\u00a0he said, &#8220;As recently as last week, [Democratic] Representative Adam Schiff was continuing to mislead his followers by peddling the long-disproved Russian Collusion Hoax, and Twitter did not flag those tweets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But as factcheck.org <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=a991a095d2&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">has<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=2dd5b3fe38&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">covered<\/a> the assertions that it is a &#8220;hoax&#8221; to suggest his presidential campaign had ties to Russia are not quite correct, with the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller establishing &#8220;multiple links between Trump Campaign officials and individuals tied to the Russian government&#8221;.\u00a0Ultimately, however, &#8220;the investigation did not establish that the Campaign coordinated or conspired with the Russian government in its election-interference activities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Mr Trump has doubled down on his claims that led to the Twitter warning and a <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=6cd18cce8c&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">slew<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=7d3dcce264&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">of<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=49e8fc513c&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">fact<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=572aef3885&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">checks<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=ed5249eff5&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">tweeting<\/a> in all caps:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;MAIL-IN VOTING WILL LEAD TO MASSIVE FRAUD AND ABUSE. IT WILL ALSO LEAD TO THE END OF OUR GREAT REPUBLICAN PARTY.
