With new insights in the way COVID19 spreads, in the way the virus behaves and in the way to deal with the pandemic every day, it is now more important than ever to safeguard the information we share is accurate and fact-based. We have to inoculate ourselves against the fake news and misinformation that infect our newsfeeds and timelines at this crucial moment by fact-checking.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">For the duration of the pandemic, I will try to give you an overview of the main issues in CoronaCheck, an Australian email newsletter with the latest from around the world concerning the coronavirus.*<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>OLD FASHIONED MISINFORMATION<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-39928\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Old_fashioned_disinformation.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Old_fashioned_disinformation.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Old_fashioned_disinformation-300x142.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Old_fashioned_disinformation-150x71.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Image source: <\/em>supplied<\/p>\n<p>In Australia, spreaders of coronavirus misinformation apparently do not want to rely on social media only and have delivered a pamphlet full of misinformation and conspiracy theories to Melbourne homes, which has been <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=64f8562b26&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">debunked by RMIT ABC Fact-check<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The unknown and untraceable authors of the pamphlet made their case for the removal of lockdown restrictions and emergency laws by comparing Australia\u2019s low COVID-19 death toll to the number of deaths caused by the seasonal flu.<\/p>\n<p>However, as Lyn Gilbert, a chief investigator at the Australian Partnership for Preparedness Research on Infectious Disease Emergencies (APPRISE), pointed out, the main reason for the low coronavirus death rate was because &#8220;we have been so successful in all the suppression measures put in place early on, before the virus was transmitted widely in the community. [] You only have to look at what happened in Italy, in Brazil, the United Kingdom, the US, or many European countries where their health systems and socio-economic conditions are not dissimilar to Australia\u2019s, to see that if we hadn\u2019t done this early we could easily have been in the same sort of situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The pamphlet further contained the misleading claims that death rates in the US supposedly were being inflated, that a vaccination conspiracy was led by Bill Gates and pharmaceutical companies and that the coronavirus pandemic was contrived.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>COVID-19 BY ANY OTHER NAME<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-39934\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/COVID-19_namegiving.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/COVID-19_namegiving.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/COVID-19_namegiving-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/COVID-19_namegiving-150x83.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Image source: RMIT ABC Fact-check<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In just a few short weeks, COVID-19 has become a household word. But how was its name, or that of other fatal viruses derived?<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump has been referring to COVID-19 as the &#8220;Chinese virus&#8221; and, while there may be a political behind it in this case, giving the virus a geographical label isn&#8217;t without precedent as viruses were usually named after the area or locale where they were thought to have originated. Think Ebola, Hendra and MERS.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, the World Health Organisation called upon scientists, governments and the media to adhere to what it called &#8220;best practices&#8221; by naming viruses to minimise &#8220;unnecessary negative effects on nations, economies and people&#8221;. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/dg\/speeches\/detail\/who-director-general-s-remarks-at-the-media-briefing-on-2019-ncov-on-11-february-2020\">WHO announced<\/a> on February 11 that the novel coronavirus would be named COVID-19, an abbreviation of &#8220;coronavirus disease 2019&#8221; \u2014 &#8220;CO&#8221; (corona), &#8220;VI&#8221; (virus), &#8220;D&#8221; (disease) and &#8220;19&#8221; (2019).<\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5>POLICE DEATHS<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-39933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Police_deaths.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Police_deaths.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Police_deaths-300x286.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Police_deaths-150x143.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Police_deaths-768x733.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Police_deaths-24x24.jpg 24w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Image source: <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=c449e5deb7&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Facebook<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You know what I find amazing,&#8221;\u00a0a post on Facebook begins. &#8220;Police are not following social distances guidance obviously, but we have not heard across the world of one police officer dying due to Covid 19.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A false claim, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=50ed7fdb69&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Reuters<\/a>\u2019 fact-checkers who found that police officers in the UK, the US, France, Italy and Peru had died after contracting the virus. They also found that the photo accompanying the post was first published in 2018, long before social distancing rules.<\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5>BILL GATES REVISITED<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-39932\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Bill_Gates_revisited.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Bill_Gates_revisited.jpg 1774w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Bill_Gates_revisited-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Bill_Gates_revisited-1024x618.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Bill_Gates_revisited-150x90.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Bill_Gates_revisited-768x463.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Bill_Gates_revisited-1536x926.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Image source: <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=0c340ec15d&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Clover Chronicle<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another week has gone and another tide of misinformation surrounding Microsoft founder and billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates had to be stemmed.<\/p>\n<p>Snopes <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=268feba44d&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">found that<\/a> a video did not show Mr Gates briefing the CIA about a &#8220;mind-altering vaccine&#8221;, <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=7ac81acb83&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">nor is Italy<\/a> calling for his arrest.<\/p>\n<p>PolitiFact found that the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=5c3fe040f4&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">was not<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;spending billions to ensure that all medical and dental injections and procedures include &#8230;.\u00a0[tracking micro]chips&#8221;. <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=6d6146e066&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Mr Gattes had also not said<\/a> a coronavirus vaccine would &#8220;permanently alter your DNA&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Further, the team at <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=1f9cd5bde8&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">PolitiFact<\/a>, along with fact-checkers at <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=3ef1e98b40&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">AFP<\/a>, found that a claim that Mr Gates had admitted &#8220;his COVID-19 vaccine might kill nearly 1 million people&#8221; was false.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>ANTI-VAXXING ON THE RISE IN AUSTRALIA<\/h5>\n<div id=\"attachment_39935\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39935\" class=\"wp-image-39935 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Anti_vax.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Anti_vax.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Anti_vax-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Anti_vax-150x81.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-39935\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The monthly number of engagements of 12 Australian anti-vaccine Facebook accounts in the last six months. CrowdTangle<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=1eecc12633&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">one of their final stories<\/a> before being shut down last week, BuzzFeed News Australia found that some of Australia\u2019s biggest anti-vaccination Facebook pages and Instagram accounts had increased sharply their follower counts, frequency of posting and monthly engagement since February, coinciding with the coronavirus outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>The reporting found that 12 major anti-vax Facebook pages had almost doubled their monthly engagement since February, while on Instagram, 24 accounts had seen five times more engagement, nearly doubling their followers. These accounts had also doubled their content output, despite efforts by Facebook (which owns Instagram) to crack down on misinformation being posted on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That content frequently contains misinformation about COVID-19 or vaccines, and sometimes even includes content that has already been banned from social media platforms,&#8221;\u00a0BuzzFeed found.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, their US counterparts (whose newsroom has not closed) have published a list of \u201cfake experts&#8221; pushing coronavirus pseudoscience, including Judy Mikovits, the doctor featured in the &#8220;Plandemic&#8221; viral video, and Rashid Buttar, whose claims regarding the flu vaccine<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=33033c508f&amp;e=f8ed60c946\"> have been widely debunked<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5>KEEP CORRECTING MISINFORMATION<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-39930\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Correct_misinformation.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Correct_misinformation.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Correct_misinformation-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Correct_misinformation-150x102.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fact-checking can sometimes seem like a lost cause: the people who are posting false claims and conspiracies can be so determined that it doesn&#8217;t matter how often the record is corrected.<\/p>\n<p>But according to fact-checkers at PolitiFact, <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=baf7c10278&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">a recent survey<\/a> showed 34 per cent of people recalled seeing someone else get corrected on social media after sharing misinformation about COVID-19. They also found <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=36721b9c0a&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">research<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=a21f6910d4&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">showing<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;when people correct misinformation on their social media feeds, misperceptions decrease&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Helpfully, the team <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=0c8a598584&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">has detailed six ways<\/a> to fact-check coronavirus misinformation on your timeline.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Don&#8217;t brush it off.<\/li>\n<li>Consider your approach carefully<\/li>\n<li>Tailoring your language<\/li>\n<li>Stick to the truth<\/li>\n<li>Choose your sources wisely<\/li>\n<li>Avoid making it political.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5>FROM WASHINGTON, D.C.<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-39931\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Twitter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"519\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Twitter.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Twitter-289x300.jpg 289w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Twitter-145x150.jpg 145w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Twitter-24x24.jpg 24w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Twitter-36x36.jpg 36w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=ad786ac65b&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">has added<\/a> warning labels to two of US President Donald Trump&#8217;s tweets <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=500fb28cc7&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">after coming under fire<\/a> for perceived failures in stopping the spread of misinformation on its platform, particularly about COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em>Note: the warning labels were added to two of Trump\u2019s tweets on postal voting, but none were added to his COVID-19 related tweets.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=ae9780e996&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">the tweets<\/a>, Mr Trump claimed that mail-in voting, a form of postal voting which is being widely rolled out in states such as California amid the coronavirus pandemic, will be &#8220;substantially fraudulent&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mail boxes will be robbed, ballots will be forged &amp; even illegally printed out &amp; fraudulently signed,&#8221;\u00a0Mr Trump said, adding that anyone living in California would receive a ballot and told who to vote for.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This will be a Rigged Election. No way!&#8221;,\u00a0he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>A label added to the tweets shows an exclamation mark and links <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=2bf5256181&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">to a page<\/a> containing &#8220;the facts about mail-in voting&#8221;. That page includes articles from <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=564c9099e8&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">CNN<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=971ac698ee&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">The Hill<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=4205bf92db&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">The Washington Post<\/a> and refutes inaccuracies in Mr Trump&#8217;s tweets.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Twitter page, fact-checkers have found no evidence that mail-in voting is linked to voter fraud.
