With new insights in the way COVID19 spreads, in the way the virus behaves and in the way to deal with the pandemic every day, it is now more important than ever to safeguard the information we share is accurate and fact-based. We have to inoculate ourselves against the fake news and misinformation that infect our newsfeeds and timelines at this crucial moment by fact-checking.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">For the duration of the pandemic, I will try to give you an overview of the main issues in CoronaCheck, an Australian email newsletter with the latest from around the world concerning the coronavirus.*<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>WORLD HEALTH ACCORDING TO ANTI-VAXXERS<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-39791\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Flu_shot_debunked.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Flu_shot_debunked.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Flu_shot_debunked-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Flu_shot_debunked-115x150.jpg 115w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A tweet, believed to <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=0ade5c35b3&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">have been posted<\/a> by a user named <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=b3d36f1721&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">VaccineTruths<\/a> on May 3, contains a screenshot of a page from the website WorldHealth.net and alleges that a 2017 study showed that people who had received a flu vaccine would be the &#8220;first to die&#8221; in a global pandemic. The page on the website appears to have <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=10c3faf03d&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">been deleted<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=862dfe6727&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">an archived version<\/a> exists.<\/p>\n<p>WorldHealth.net Internet has been included NewsGuard\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=01eec217de&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">list<\/a> of websites publishing false coronavirus information the site <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=cb9aa3941b&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">&#8220;violates basic standards of credibility and transparency&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The text screenshot contains comes from an article headlined &#8220;BOMBSHELL: Flu Shots Scientifically Proven to Weaken Immune Response in Subsequent Years&#8221;, which cites a 2017 study conducted by Lisa Christian of the Ohio State Medical Centre. This study, however, looked into the effect of flu vaccinations on pregnant women and newborns and makes no mention of a person\u2019s likelihood of dying in a pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>According to RMIT Vice-Chancellor&#8217;s Research Fellow\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=3edca39646&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Kylie Quinn<\/a>, who has researched vaccines, there was no evidence in the paper that a flu vaccine made people more susceptible to influenza.<\/p>\n<p>In general, there was no evidence at all that people who had received flu shots would be the first to die in a pandemic. Dr Quinn said that she knew of <strong>no credible evidence<\/strong> to support other claims contained in the post, such as people who received a flu jab in 2008 &#8220;experienced a 250 per cent increase in influenza infections in subsequent years&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>THAT BILL GATES AGAIN<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39788\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Crop_circles.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Crop_circles.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Crop_circles-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Crop_circles-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Image source: <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=4077b6722a&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Snopes<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>More misinformation, <span style=\"color: #993366;\">or should we say disinformation<\/span>, regarding Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates, appeared as a photo, shared on social media, which showed a crop circle in the UK featuring the Microsoft logo.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Amazing crop circle arrives overnight near Stonehenge, UK&#8230; Think they are trying to tell us something\u2026? Microsoft Bill Gates made the Corona Virus?&#8221;\u00a0one <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=22cbecb5ac&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">tweet<\/a> featuring the photo reads.<\/p>\n<p>But fact-checkers at <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=27de4c8677&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Snopes<\/a> were able to track down <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=69eb80ab60&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">the original<\/a> image of a 2004 crop circle altered to feature the Microsoft logo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>ANOTHER WRITER WRONGLY ATTRIBUTED<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-39790\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/C_S_Lewis.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/C_S_Lewis.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/C_S_Lewis-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/C_S_Lewis-105x150.jpg 105w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Image source:\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=1015ed9ed1&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Facebook<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A passage of text quoting an imaginary exchange between Satan and Jesus has been misattributed to the <em>Chronicles of Narnia<\/em> author C.S. Lewis, written supposedly during WWII, circa 1942.<\/p>\n<p>The text quotes Satan as saying he will &#8220;shut down business, schools, places of worship, and sport events&#8221; and \u201ccause economic turmoil\u201d, while Jesus retorts: \u201cI will bring together neighbours [and] restore the family unit.&#8221; Jesus continues: \u201cI will help people slow down their lives and appreciate what really matters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=7f43ce2113&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Reuters<\/a> found the real author to be a social media user named Heidi May, who told the fact-checkers she wrote the post on a day she was feeling overwhelmed in early March.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>INTERNATIONAL CORONAVIRUS FACT-CHECKING<\/h5>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=250c2d3ebc&amp;e=f8ed60c946\"> International Fact-Checking Network\u2019s<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=ec15cb1987&amp;e=f8ed60c946\"> database of coronavirus fact checks<\/a>, created to combat misinformation about the virus, has already hit a milestone 5,000 fact checks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The five most popular fact checks<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>An investigation by Spanish<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=d9dc3c82d7&amp;e=f8ed60c946\"> Maldita.es<\/a> into\u00a0a WhatsApp message<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=cb3241bde7&amp;e=f8ed60c946\"> claiming<\/a> that Pope Francis had instructed believers to put a white cloth on their doorsteps to protect them from the plague. They found no evidence of any such advice in the Pope\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=513107d370&amp;e=f8ed60c946\"> public appearances<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=f195c73004&amp;e=f8ed60c946\"> statements<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The same Spanish outlet also debunked several of the coronavirus-related claims made by disgraced virologist Judy Mikovits in the viral video &#8220;Plandemic&#8221;, as noted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/2020\/05\/12\/covid-19-fact-and-fiction-6\/\">COVID-19 Fact and Fiction #6<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The Mexican fact-checking network<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=f84eb6f351&amp;e=f8ed60c946\"> Animal Politico<\/a> looked into<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=79be05595a&amp;e=f8ed60c946\"> claims<\/a> that COVID-19 is a thrombosis which should be treated with antibiotics. They found that while<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=4a417c2e60&amp;e=f8ed60c946\"> some Italian researchers<\/a> found pulmonary thrombosis to be linked to the coronavirus, the virus was essentially a respiratory illness, and was not treatable with antibiotics.<\/li>\n<li>In India,<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=d3a3b8d7fd&amp;e=f8ed60c946\"> FactCrescendo<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=fc414dfff5&amp;e=f8ed60c946\"> debunked a video<\/a> which purported to show bodies of coronavirus victims being thrown into the sea. The video actually showed the bodies of African migrants who had been trying to get to Europe washed ashore in Libya in 2014.<\/li>\n<li>Both<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=56e13c7c8d&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">es<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=6612dc39e3&amp;e=f8ed60c946\"> India Today<\/a> debunked the claim that Harvard Professor Charles Lieber was arrested for creating the coronavirus and selling it to China. Lieber was certainly arrested but in reality, charged with concealing a foreign conflict of interest from investigators according to a US Justice Department<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=f7bd26ca77&amp;e=f8ed60c946\"> statement<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>SAFE TO FLY<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39787\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Disinfecting_airplane.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Disinfecting_airplane.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Disinfecting_airplane-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Disinfecting_airplane-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=8d99e88f46&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">Reuters: Kham<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the US, with some states are relaxing lockdown rules and summer holidays\u00a0approach, the CEO of Southwest Airlines <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=94a4518ab7&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">claimed in an appearance on CBS <\/a>that an aeroplane is &#8220;as safe as an environment as you\u2019re going to find&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Fact-checkers at <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=802f313122&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">PolitiFact<\/a> noted that planes had air ventilation systems that circulate purified air and that airlines were taking substantial steps to protect travellers. Experts said flying would be relatively safe as long as everyone onboard wore masks and wiped down surfaces but also noted passengers would be unable to maintain distance from each other inside the aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>There would still be risks despite protective measures being taken by the airlines. &#8220;Is an airplane potentially carrying an infectious passenger safer than your own home, where the only contact with a stranger you have is grabbing the takeout dinner order left on your porch by a delivery person?&#8221;\u00a0PolitiFact posed. &#8220;Clearly not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>FROM WASHINGTON, D.C.<\/h5>\n<p>Barack Obama has criticised his successor, calling President Donald Trump\u2019s response to the coronavirus pandemic &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=bf7a626e30&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">an absolute chaotic disaster<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>The critique led Mr Trump to retweet a <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=0833665122&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">claim<\/a> that &#8220;Barack Hussain Obama is the first Ex-President to ever speak against his successor, which was [a] long tradition of decorum and decency.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He tagged the post: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=ffd1640944&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">He got caught, OBAMAGATE!<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=88247005ecfbacf91efa65685&amp;id=08811f7411&amp;e=f8ed60c946\">PolitiFact<\/a> found that, in fact, a long line of former presidents had offered their successors &#8220;improvement suggestions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Herbert Hoover, for example, railed against Franklin D. Roosevelt\u2019s New Deal and liberalism &#8220;from the time he left office in 1933 until his death in the mid-1960s&#8221;. Historians contacted by PolitiFact also pointed out that Jimmy Carter&#8217;s policies were ridiculed by predecessor Gerald Ford.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Carter carried on the tradition.
